Lot 98

French school. Follows models by Antoine Watteau, 19th century.Pair of country scenes.Oil on canvas. With apocryphal signature J.B. Pater on the back.Measurements. 32 x 46 cm. c.u.; 44,5 x 58 cm.(frames).Pair of landscapes in which one of the favourite themes of the great master of the 18th century, Antoine Watteau, is developed: the country parties of gallant atmosphere. It is not only the theme that the painter in question emulates, but also the manner of resolving the landscape and the figures enjoying an idle afternoon. Dense foliage immerses us in a dreamy atmosphere which is nevertheless realistic, achieving an exquisite balance between lyricism and truthfulness. The effigies decorating the stone fountains seem to come to life to the sound of music played by soft lutes and mandolins. Different strata of society coexist in these places: the gallant aristocracy, in their sumptuous silk and lace dresses, are accompanied by a retinue of humble strata, who remain in the background, partially hidden by the undergrowth. Finally, the musicians also form a separate group, although their music is the unseen protagonist of these idyllic scenes. A wide range of ways of being and moving respond to a profound anthropological study, as well as showing great skill in the brushstroke. But the great protagonist is the colour and the light, capable of embracing a wide spectrum of emerald and dark green cadences, with a brushstroke that makes nature throb, achieving a vibrant result.
