English Lambeth, London delftware plate, circa 1785 commemorating the flight of Vincenzo Lunardi on 15 September 1784, polychrome decorated in blue, green and manganese showing Lunardi's balloon ascending above a house and trees, within a floral swag border, restored and small chips to the rim, 22.5 cm QTY: (1)NOTE:Vincenzo Lunardi (1754-1806) was born in Luca, Italy and was a pioneering aeronaut. He came to England as Secretary to Prince Caramanico, the Neapolitan Ambassador.On 15 September 1784 Lunardi 'The Daredevil Aeronaut demonstrated a hydrogen balloon flight at the Artillery Ground of the Honourable Artillery Company in London. He had intended to be accompanied by his friend George Biggin, however, the 200,000 strong crowd which included the Prince of Wales had grown impatient and Lunardi had to take off without Biggin, but he was accompanied by a dog cat and pigeon. The flight from the Artillery Ground travelled north towards Hertfordshire. Lunardi touched down briefly in a cornfield near North Mymms to release the cat who had become unwell. He completed his flight in Stanton Green End. A stone in Welham Green near North Mymms commemorates this flight.

Three loose inserts (Ian Fleming interest, Stop Press notices, one each in Numbers Five, Seven and Eight); coloured order form, unused, in Number One; used order form - torn-off half - in Number Six. Ian Fleming proposed the terms of the first competition to be run by this journal, to design the twenty-seventh letter of the alphabet. Terms were detailed in Stop Press No.1, a four-page insert to Magazine No 5. "All submissions to be received by 15th November 1947, with Mr. Fleming to be the sole judge. The prize is a book token of five guineas". A very early literary endeavour by the future James Bond novelist. (8)

David Taylor was a successful businessman of Scottish descent who was born in Northern Ireland. He resided in Belfast and owned various commercial buildings, shops and a farm. He also had a substantial portfolio of stocks and shares. These jade items were acquired by Taylor during his travels to East Asia in the early 20th century.

NO RESERVEA CHINESE SPINACH-GREEN JADE RUYI SCEPTRE QING DYNASTY The head carved as a large flat lingzhi decorated with a trailing lotus in low relief, the shaft carved with further flowering lotus stems, the stone mottled with light inclusions throughout; together with a zhadou, its bulbous body and flared rim raised on a short straight foot, with an even dark colour to the stone, 34.2cm and 8.8cm. The Victoria & Albert Museum, London, accession no.A.17-1925, for a similar spinach-green jade ruyi sceptre naturalistically carved as a lingzhi. This example was given as a diplomatic gift on 14 September 1793 by the Qianlong Emperor to Sir George Leonard Staunton, Secretary and Minister Plenipotentiary of the first British Embassy to China lead by Lord George Macartney. Though to an early English audience the significance of ruyi sceptres was unclear and generally misunderstood as a symbol of sovereignity, they have always featured in Chinese culture as tokens of good fortune. The word ruyi signifies 'as you wish', pointing to the auspicious significance to these objects. As such, they were seen as appropriate Imperial gifts for diplomatic exchanges such as the British Embassy of 1793.

(2)Please note the stone has not been tested for colour treatment.Provenance: from an English private collection, purchased in the 1940s and 1950s.Jadeite ranks among the rarest and most precious materials to have been used during the 18th century. The material was brought to China from Myanmar along trade routes towards the end of the Qianlong reign and craftsmen at the Palace Workshops began working with it then. Most extant jadeite objects in the old Imperial collection date from the late Qianlong and early Jiaqing periods.
