DDS William Moelwyn Merchant (1913-1997), ‘Growing Form’, a polished sculpture, on a stone base, titled and signed to a label beneath, 33.5cm high overall; two books by Merchant: Jeshua, Swansea 1987 and Fragments of a Life, Llandysul 1990; and a booklet by Merchant: Breaking the Mould, Gomer Press 1975, author signed and dedicated. Merchant was an Anglican priest, academic, novelist, poet and sculptor. Besides his work as a sculptor, he was best known as Professor of English Literature at Exeter, a canon of Salisbury Cathedral and had many connections with artists such as Barbara Hepworth and the poet Ted Hughes.

Detachable brooch fitting. French remark for foreign articles. Replacement visor clasp, one replacement stone, not diamond. Tested as approximately 18ct gold and silver CONDITION REPORT: Areas of light tarnish to the leaf. Glue where the replacement stone has been set. The replacement stone is not a rose cut, but not one of the larger diamonds. Approximately 2.50mm diameter. Reverse - light surface wear, consistent with age; visor catch may be a replacement (a more yellow colour). Please view additional images (available upon request).

Finger size R CONDITION REPORT: Some wear to the setting edges of the smaller diamonds in the shoulders. Wear to the back of the shank. Has been sized in the past. One claw on the collet of the principle diamond is pushed out of position. Gold collets, under bezels and shank. Tested as approximately 18ct gold, silver setting to the shoulders.

A Continental early 20th century diamond and synthetic ruby five stone carved head ring, an old brilliant cut diamond, with an estimated weight of approximately 1.25ct, with an oval mixed cut synthetic ruby to each side, and an old European cut diamond to each end. All claw set with pairs of old eight cut diamonds to a carved head. Marked 18K. Principal diamond assessed as approximately. Colour: H/I Clarity: P1-P2 Finger size approximately Q (not round) CONDITION REPORT: All the claws are intact, although some are not quite down on the crown facets. Slightly oval in shape as the ring has been reduced in size at some stage.

A late Victorian style five stone diamond ring with diamond set points, one cushion cut diamond, estimated as approximately 1.00ct, two old European cut diamonds, estimated as approximately 0.69ct each, and two old European cut diamonds, estimated as approximately 0.55ct each. All claw set to a carved head with pairs of eight cut diamond set points. Tested as approximately 18ct gold. Finger size R½-S CONDITION REPORT: Replacement half shank fitted. The main claws all appear to have been re tipped in the past, although one has a hairline stress fracture.

Lot 299

A French platinum Belle Époque pearl and diamond set necklace, c.1915, with a detachable centrepiece, a series of graduated open swag links, milligrain set with old Swiss cut, eight cut and rose cut diamonds, with a series of graduated pearls, 4.5-7.4mm in size, one cup and peg set between each link. A detachable centrepiece composed of an open pear shaped link, milligrain set with diamonds, to an articulated bell shaped pendant drop, with four old European cut diamonds, milligrain set to articulated collets at the centre. French poinçon 1847-1919. Maker's mark attributed to Silbermann Frères 1904. Pearls untested. Pre-owned receipt dated 1955 from Arthur H Drew Ltd. together with an insurance valuation for the same year, one paste replacement CONDITION REPORT: A foil back paste replacement stone to the tulip shaped pendant drop. Appears yellow in the images. Pearls 4.5mm - 6.7mm in the necklace, 7.5mm in the drop. Shape: round, semi-round and bouton. Necklace width 6.6mm to 10.3mm. The detachable pendant is 60mm long including top pearl. Estimated weights of the four principal diamonds in the tulip shaped drop: 0.36ct, 0.17ct, 0.12ct, 0.05ct.

Lot 301

A two stone pearl and diamond crossover ring, c.1930, two bouton shaped pearls, 5.9mm diameter, cup and peg set in a crossover position, the shoulders each grain set with three, eight cut diamonds to a plain shank. Marked PLAT 18ct, both pearls untested. Finger size P CONDITION REPORT: Requires cleaning. Slight difference in colour between the two pearls. One medium cream the other more of a light silver/cream.

An early 20th century three stone diamond Edna May pendant, a cushion shaped old eight cut diamond, milligrain set to a plain collet with an articulated bar below, to an old Swiss cut diamond in a matching collet. An articulated bar below, with a pear shaped diamond, articulated to a milligrain collet below that CONDITION REPORT: Dirty and tarnished.

Lot 308

An Edwardian five stone diamond and pearl bar brooch, three graduated old European cut diamonds, claw set to rex collets at the centre and at each end, with two bouton pearls, cup and peg set between. All mounted to a blade edge bar. Pearls untested CONDITION REPORT: 35mm in length. Very tarnished. Slight curve to the pin. Diamonds approximately: x2 @ 0.18ct; x1 @ 0.27ct. Two bouton shaped pearls (untested). Smooth skins - good lustre.

Marked PLAT. Finger size M½ CONDITION REPORT: Surface wear commensurate with its age. No obvious faults or damage. Dirty - requires cleaning.

Lot 342

An Art Deco single stone diamond ring with diamond set shoulders, an emerald cut diamond, with an estimated weight of 2.25ct, double claw set to a sea scroll collet, with diamond set milligrain set leaf shoulders. Diamond assessed as approximately. Colour: I/J Clarity: VS1/VS2 Finger size K CONDITION REPORT: A replacement half shank has been fitted in the past. Some wear to each side of the underbezel. The doublet claws to the centre stone are very worn and show some file marks. The diamond is not sitting square and will have to be re-set in the collet after re-tipping work is undertaken. It is believed the ring is Art Deco, but has had restoration and repair work over the years to enable it to still be worn. Half shank. Shoulders possibly re-used. The collet to the centre diamond may have been replaced although the underbezel looks original. The diamond set leaf shoulders appear to have been re-used or re-applied. One chenier deficient. Due to the repairs and restoration on this ring, it will not pass assay. The shank tests as approximately 18ct white gold. The collet tests as approximately 9ct white gold. There appears to be lines of dark solder to the shoulders.

Lot 343

An Art Deco single stone diamond ring with diamond set shoulders, a rectangular cushion cut diamond, with an estimated weight of approximately 1.08ct, four claw set at the corners to a plain collet. Tapered shoulders, each rub set with a baguette cut diamond and a milligrain set crescent, to bifurcated shoulders. Tested as platinum. Diamond assessed as approximately. Colour: L/M Clarity: P1-P2 Finger size N CONDITION REPORT: A series of indented naturals and bearding all round the girdle. Some small concoidal fractures at the edges of the indented naturals; could look like chips (taken into account for clarity grading). Slightly thin at the back of the shank through wear. Very dirty. Setting appears secure.

A single stone diamond ring with diamond set shoulders, an old brilliant cut diamond with an estimated weight of approximately 1.14ct, eight claw set to a pierced kite design collet. Three, eight cut diamonds, grain set to each shoulder, marked PLAT. Assessed as approximately. Colour: H/I Clarity: P1-P2 Finger size O CONDITION REPORT: Claws all intact, although two are a little thin. Very dirty, requires cleaning. Thin at the back of the shank from wear. Has been sized up in the past.

A single stone diamond ring, set with a cushion cut diamond of approximately 1.49ct, the diamond eight claw set to a coronet collet, with chenier shoulders to a plain shank. Marked PLAT. Diamond assessed as approximately. Colour: L/M Clarity: P1-P2 Finger size O CONDITION REPORT: Claws all in very good condition. Light surface wear only. Dirty.

A pair of single stone diamond stud earrings, a brilliant cut diamond, estimated as approximately 0.34ct each, claw set to rex collets, with post and butterfly fittings. One butterfly deficient. Tested approximately as 18ct white gold.

Lot 347

A pair of single stone diamond stud earrings, each old European cut diamond claw set to a rex collet, with post and butterfly fittings. One odd butterfly CONDITION REPORT: The collets are closed back due to the post fittings, so cannot be accurately measured. The diamonds are estimated as approximately 0.40ct each. The diamonds are a slightly different colour from each other, possibly J/K and K/L; the clarity is SI1-SI2.

Marked 18ct. Diamonds assessed as approximately. Colour: L/M, I/J Clarity: VS1/VS2, SI1-SI2 Finger size T½

Lot 389

An 18ct gold emerald and diamond three stone ring, a pear shaped emerald, claw set to a shaped collet, with a trilliant cut diamond, claw set in a white collet to each side, Sheffield 1996. Finger size O½ CONDITION REPORT: Very small chips to the girdle of the emerald, only visible under 10x magnification. Does not really detract from the ring. Emerald 12.2 x 8.13 x 5.3, estimated as approximately 5.52ct. Stone loose in the setting. Claws intact, so should be possible to have it tightened by a setter. Diamonds 4.3 x 4.5 (mount precludes measurement of depth, so cannot calculate the weight). Very dirty. Surface marks, but good quality mount.
