Compared to earlier and later Thai kingdoms, Dvaravati was relatively geographically and economically isolated, which contributed to the distinct qualities of its sculpture, such as the arched eyebrows, the broad, squared face, and the full, prominent lips. Additionally, the local stone was tough and difficult to work with, leading artists to prefer thick, strong features over softness and subtlety.Literature comparison:Compare a related head of Buddha, dated to the 8th century, Thailand, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1983.13. Boulder mountains testify to the jade carvers' tremendous skills and reflect their reverence for the natural qualities of the stone. Set of five scarabs; Egypt, Second Intermediate Period - New Kingdom, 1800-69.White steatite. With seals on the base.Measurements: 1 x 0.5 cm (x5).A set of five raised scarabs in white steatite. Generally the scarabs were carved in green stone and placed on the chest of the deceased, to protect the heart and to replace it during mummification. The purpose of the 'heart scarab' was to ensure that the heart would not testify against the deceased at the judgement of the dead. Another possibility is suggested by the words of transformation in the Sarcophagus Texts, which state that the soul of the deceased can transform itself into a human, a god, or a bird and reappear in the world of the living.

Medusa. Smyrna, 3rd century BC.Terracotta.Provenance: Smyrna, 1895-1905. Collection Paul Gaudin (Paris 1858-1921 Versailles), archaeologist, engineer and great patron of the Louvre Museum; Acquired between 1894 and 1905 and by family descent. Public auction, France, 2022.Measurements: 3.2 x 2.8 cm.Head of Medusa in terracotta. In Greek mythology, Medusa was a female chthonic being who turned to stone those who stared into her eyes. This piece is part of an archaeological collection of 670 fragments, considered the second most important after the Louvre (1094 fragments) and ahead of those of the Istanbul Archaeological Museum (135) and the British Museum (108). According to Simone Besques (1972, p.155) "There are hardly any public or private collections that do not contain Smyrna figurines, most of which are unfortunately fragmentary. Nevertheless, they testify to the fact that from the 3rd century BC to the 2nd century AD, there was the most important Hellenistic and Greco-Roman workshop there, both in terms of the quality and originality of its production, and the fact that these figures remained intact until the Roman period".Smyrna was one of the original terracotta centres of Asia Minor. The city was refounded by Lysimachus around 288 BC, a short distance from its former location. Continued habitation until more recent times made systematic excavations impossible. Most of the Smyrna figurines on display in major museums in Europe and the United States are mostly fragments of heads. Smyrna figurines are easily recognised by the colour of their clay, which varies from brown to red. The clay is fine and homogeneous, and contains traces of gold and silver. Some samples still retain their colours. They are carefully modelled. In terms of subject matter, many popular types from the great terracotta art of the Classical or Hellenistic period prevail, such as those of Herakles, deities and athletes. Another favourite subject was clothed female figures of the "Tanagrian" type. There are also so-called "grotesque figures" with exaggerated anatomical deformities. They probably represented real people suffering from deforming diseases. The terracotta style of Smyrna shows great similarities with that of Myrina. It is likely that the same terracotta artists worked in both cities. It is more likely that there was a relevant relationship in Pergamon and Cyme. On the other hand, certain thematic types of the Smyrna workshop - the black figures and the grotesque ones - allude to the terracotta art of Alexandria, which ensures a close commercial and artistic relationship with that city. Figurines from Smyrna were highly prized in the ancient world. They were exported to Myrina, Priene, Pergamon, Troy, Tarsus, Delos, Athens, Cyprus and Black Sea cities.

Anthropomorphic figure with dog. Cyprus. Circa 750 BC.Terracotta.Provenance: Private collection of Columbia University Professor of Economics Vladimir Gregorievitch Simkhovitch(1874-1959), USA. Vladimir was a great collector of ancient art and works from his collection are housed inthe Smithsonian Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Brooklyn Museum, among others.Preservation: Crack in the lower part.Measurements: 35.5 cm high; 44 cm high with stand.Cypriot male figure, showing the schematism and stylisation characteristic of this Mediterranean culture. The figure, with a tubular body and broad shoulders, holds a small dog in his left arm, also resolved in a synthetic way.Ancient Cypriot art refers to all works of visual art originating from Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean, from about 10,000 BC to about 330 AD. During this period various types of objects such as domestic tools, weapons, jewellery and decorative figures were produced. This range of art attests to the mixture of both native and foreign influences from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome as they successively occupied the country. Works of art produced in ancient Cyprus incorporate almost every visual art medium worked in ancient history, including terracotta, stone, metals, glass, and precious stones.

Egypt.- Hieroglyphs.- Champollion (Jean Francois) Grammaire Égyptienne, first edition, lithographed hieroglyphs throughout, some printed in red, a few in colours, occasional offsetting, original printed wrappers, upper and lower covers backed with a few repairs and some restoration to extremities, rebacked, some marking and toning to covers, folio, Paris, Firmin Didot Fréres, 1836[-1841].⁂ This monumental work of Champollion (1790-1832), known above all as the decipherer of the Rosetta stone, is the grand summation of his work in cracking Egyptian hieroglyphs and laid the foundations for all subsequent discoveries in Egyptology. It contains the first printed list of hieroglyphs; 260 in all. The printing, from Champollion's meticulous manuscript, was a complex process. It required a special combination of all the standard alphabetic languages (French, Latin, Greek, Coptic, etc.) to be set in the usual way in type, leaving blank spaces for the hieroglyphs. The typesetting was then transferred to lithographic plates where the hieroglyphs were engraved and then each page, including type and hieroglyphs, was reprinted lithographically. This was the first time such a technique was used in France. Rare in the original printed wrappers.

At the same time, Arthur Huc was a keen collector of Asian art, a passion that he inherited from his legendary ancestor Evariste Regis Huc, also known as the Abbe Huc (1813-1860), a French Catholic priest and traveler who became famous for his accounts of Qing-era China, Mongolia and especially the then-almost-unknown Tibet in his book “Remembrances of a Journey in Tartary, Tibet, and China”.Inventory List: In 1954, L. A RARE PALE CELADON JADE 'SANYANG AND TAIJITU' GROUP, 18TH CENTURYChina. Carved as three recumbent rams, the larger animal with its head turned to the right, two smaller rams nestled at its side, each with wisps of vapor billowing from the mouths, with fine hair markings on the edge of the tails. The larger ram with a taijitu symbol emerging from its vapor. The translucent stone of an even pale celadon tone.Provenance: From the collection of the late Michael Sherrard CBE, QC, acquired before 2000 and thence by descent. Michael Sherrard (1928-2012) was an English barrister in fraud and company law who was considered one of the great recent influences on the legal profession. He was involved in numerous high-profile cases in both English and East Asian courts, particularly Hong Kong and Singapore. Together with Linda Goldman, he wrote a memoir titled “Wigs and Wherefores: A Biography of Michael Sherrard QC”. Sherrard was an enthusiastic collector of Chinese art, especially jade carvings. Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, a fine natural fissure to the larger ram's head, and possibly microscopic nicks here and there. The stone with an attractive soft polish.Weight: 353.5 g Dimensions: Length 10.2 cmThe ram is a symbol of filial piety, kindness, and patience. The three rams, san yang, are also an auspicious motif, related both to the sun and to male children, as they provide a rebus for san yang kai tai, the opening up of the new growth in spring, which in turn symbolizes happiness and good fortune. Furthermore, the motif of three goats with the taijitu symbol suggests the auspicious beginning of a new year, based on a quotation from the I Ching (Yijing or Book of Changes).A taijitu is a symbol or diagram in Chinese philosophy representing Taiji, the "utmost extreme", in both its monist (wuji) and its dualist (yin and yang) aspects. Such a diagram was first introduced by Song dynasty philosopher Zhou Dunyi (1017-1073) in his Taijitu shuo. The modern Taoist canon, compiled during the Ming era, has at least half a dozen variants of such taijitu. The two most similar are the "Taiji Primal Heaven" (tàijí xiāntiān tú) and the "wuji" (wújí tú) diagrams, both of which have been extensively studied during the Qing period for their possible connection with Zhou Dunyi's taijitu.Literature comparison:Compare with three jade groups of the three rams in the Palace Museum, Beijing, one illustrated in Jadeware (III), The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 88 (fig. 1).
