ZOROASTRIAN BOWL. A rare, late 19th century Burmese silver ceremonial Zoroastrian Muktad bowl. Embossed in high relief with a design based on the carved stone relief at Behistun, it depicts the Persian King, Darius the Great, with his foot on the defeated usurper, Gaumata. Nine figures stand before Darius, representing the defeated rebel nations, with their hands & necks bound. The Zoroastrian deity Ahuramazda floats above the scene. The bowl also shows the now crowned Darius on his horse saluting his nobles, the body of Gaumata beneath the horse's hooves. The base of the bowl is engraved with a peacock, the Burmese silversmith's "signature". Diameter 15cm. Height 17cm. Approx. 48oz. Note: Muktad bowls are used for Zoroastrian prayer ceremonials, for 10 days before the Parsee New Year, when the Parsees welcome their departed back to the Fire Temples. Each soul has their own bowl, filled daily with fresh water. Provenance: Details of provenance available from The Auctioneer.
