The tassels to the front of the seats appear to be carved from a separate piece of stone that is inserted into the main body via the square sockets, there is a slight gap in this area however all is holding securely at time of report. Mr. Jonker informs us that the tassels were replacements made from donor stone taken from the undersides of the stools and are therefore made from the same substance as the remainder of the stools. The work is 2.44 metres (8 feet) in height and was commissioned to commemorate victory in a sea battle as well as in honour of the goddess. It is famed for the way in which it conveys a sense of action and triumph as well as portraying artful flowing drapery, the goddess being portrayed as descending to alight upon the prow of a warshipRendered in grey and white Thasian and Parian marble, the figure originally formed part of the Samothrace temple complex dedicated to the Great gods, Megaloi Theoi. Bernini was only 23 years old at its completion. Soon after its completion the statue was given by Scipione to Cardinal Ludovisi, who transported it to the Villa Ludovisi. One of the pair was delivered, the order for the second example -this one, being cancelled Condition Report: Please note whilst on view at Mr. Jonker's premises and visible in the 360 tour this fountain is supported above a D-shaped pool. This pool is not included in the lot. Also the pool showing in the catalogue and online image is not included either this is shown for inspiration only. The lot is, as catalogued, the circular wall mount and stand base. Mr Jonker would suggest lot 199 may make a suitable pool for this fountain, obviously this would need to be purchased along side. The successful bidder may wish to make contact with Mr Jonker for further advice and assistance.There are three holes in all for water - the central mouth and both snakeheads. Indeed a comparable sculpted stone group of an eagle and a serpent was excavated in the City of London as recently as 2013, with the serpent held in the beak of the bird in a similar way to the composition of the group offered in this lot.
