* WWI - 25th Middlesex Regiment. My Experience of Army Life from 7th October 1916 to 25th July 1918, a complete exercise book of 140 pages, presumably written up from notes shortly after the end of the War by an unidentified soldier, beginning with his recruitment in Ashford, Kent in October 1916, page 14 with the heading `The journey & voyage from Aldershot to Hong Kong of 25th Batallion Middlesex Regiment, 23rd December 1916 to 1st April 1917`, 12 pages containing a diary account of the events of 6th February 1917 when their steamship Tyndareus struck a mine off Cape Agulhas, South Africa, with no loss of life, `just as I was coming away from side from watching the vessel ahead, a terrific explosion was heard that shook the ship from stern to stern, and a huge column of mingled smoke & water rose in the air & splashed over the deck bringing fishes with it`, and later four pages with an account of the Happy Valley Racecourse fire on the 25th February 1918 during the Regiment`s time of garrison duty in Hong Kong, a few pen and ink vignettes, one b & w photo of some of the regiment giving cheers to His Majesty the King upon receiving his message of admiration for the conduct displayed by all ranks on the occasion of the accident to the Tyndareus, a related newscutting from the Hong Kong Daily Press, 14th May 1917 pasted in, sundry accounts etc. at rear, contemp. half cloth, sl. soiled and a little frayed at spine ends, 8vo, two much later letters (one incomplete and both possibly by the author of the diary), a modern real photo postcard of Tyndareus and a copy death certificate of private George Thompson Arblaster (died 1915) loosely inserted. The 25th Middlesex Regiment`s Commanding Officer Lieutenant John Ward commissioned the erection of a memorial, sited on the Peak of Hong Kong Island, to commemorate the exemplary conduct displayed by his men when the Tyndareus was mined. By association it also commemorates the Fire in 1918 where Lieutenant Ward`s prompt action saved many lives, though the death toll was 570. Due to the impending British withdrawal from Hong Kong the stone was brought to England in 1994 and now is inside the National Army Museum. (5)
