JOHNSON AMY: (1903-1941) English Pioneer Aviatrix. A.L.S., Amy, two pages, 8vo, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, 27th May n.y. (1940), to her friend Lona Grainger, on the printed stationery of the Stone House hotel. Johnson laments that she has never been able to visit her correspondent in Blackpool and remarks `Now it`s out of the question for the duration as I`ve joined the A.T.A. [Air Transport Auxiliary] & am now working hard at Hatfield Aerodrome. We only get Sundays off & not always that, & very little petrol. I hate the life & am fed up to the teeth with doing such a stupid job when everyone is being urged to do everything they can. I feel awfully I`m wasting my time & not doing anything really useful, but maybe I`m being unjust about it. I only joined as a last resort, & it`s even worse than I expected. It`s like being back at a girls school again!` She continues to ask `Why aren`t you doing something useful! You ought to be a land girl or something. They`re really beginning to need women now, but even yet the demand isn`t very great. What an efficient nation we are!!!` Accompanied by the original envelope (postage stamp cut away) hand addressed by Johnson. A letter of interesting content. A couple of slight, minor spots of foxing, otherwise VG
