A Chinese black limestone carving of a mythical beast: seated on it's haunches and scratching it's neck with a hind paw, on plain rectangular base, the carved and polished stone of mottled black and grey colour, probably Tang Dynasty, 24 cm high [chips to base]. * Provenance: Private collection Dorset. By family tradition, acquired by the present owner's mother at auction in London in the early 1980s.
A Chinese carved hardstone tripod vase and cover: of compressed globular form on mask head cabriole legs, the handles in the form of mythical beasts with loose rings, the cover surmounted with a Buddhistic lion dog, the stone of mottled celadon and brown colour, 21 cm high. * Provenance. A small quantity of Chinese carved jade, malacite and hardstone items; comprising a 'Gu' vase of archaic bronze form, carved with four rows of blades, the stone of greyish celadon colour, 13 cm high, a circular pale celadon pendant carved with gourds, in a white metal mount, 4.5 cm diameter, a malachite carving of a lotus leaf: 8 x 5.5 cm and wood stand, a hinged bangle with pierced mounts stamped 14k, 7.5 cm diameter and a small pendant carved in the form of melons and foliage, 4 cm long.
