Boxing Interest: A STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERY FIGURE GROUP OF THE BARE-KNUCKLE BOXERS HEENAN AND SAYERS (Pugh pp. 527-8 and p.532 pl 7 upper left), on a naturalistic base with moulded gilt titling, 22cm, (8.6in) high ***The fight between John Carmel Heenan ("The Benicia Boy") of New York State and Tom Sayers of Pimlico, Champion of England, took place at Farnborough on April 17th 1860. Attended by 12,000 spectators, the fight lasted 37 rounds totalling two hours and six minutes. In the fourth round, Sayers dislocated his right arm and fought the remainder of the fight one-handed. Sayers gave away three stone in weight and six inches in height to Heenan. The amazing fight ended in a draw, with each fighter awarded the champion;'s belt. Sayers retired after the fight. Upon his death from tuberculosis the general puiblic donated £3,000 to his family.
