KENNETH DENTON SHOESMITH (BRITISH, 1890-1939)H.M.Schoolship 'Conway' off Liverpool with assorted shipping Signed 'Kenneth D. Shoesmith' (lower left)Watercolour heightened with white10 x 12½in. (25.5 x 32cm.)Built as H.M.S. Nile (see lot 161) in 1839, a veteran of the Crimea campaign, she was converted to a schoolship and renamed Conway in 1875. She remained on the Mersey until World War II before being sent to Plas Newydd for safety and stayed on the Menai Straights thereafter. In 1953 she was being towed to Liverpool for dry-docking when she stranded in the Menai Straight and became a total loss, the last of her was burned in 1956 and the school continued ashore as a 'stone frigate'.Fine overall condition.

There are minor undulations across the surface but the canvases are in plane. One of the paintings has an impact damage which has resulted in a tear in the original and lining canvases. The paint layers are stable overall. Localised areas of overpaint are well matched to the original. The varnish layers are clear but matte and slightly dull.
A collection of silver,comprising a George III ladle, by William Cripps, London 1777, a mug, London 1902, the handle modelled as a lion, 10cm high, a cased set of gilt spoons, Birmingham 1867, a propelling pencil, the top inset with a purple paste stone, 10cm long, a Victorian mustard pot, and a pair of Victorian pepperettes, 10cm hightotal 19oztCondition ReportTarnishing, marks and wear throughout. The lock to the cased set of spoons is broken.
Ivory Coast, Dan Kran, face mask, late 19th to early 20 C., well shaped lips, tubular eyes flanking the small nose beneath a slanting forehead plane circumlined by 'horns', several holes on the lower periphery of the mask.The present mask has an exceptional quality and age. The weathered wood and grooved upper lip in combination with a layered medium brown to black patina ensures an age up to at least one hundred years. Weathered through time which lends this mask an almost stone-like appearance. The physiognomy still shows the work of a master carver. L. 21,5 cm. on a custom made stand.
