The canvas tension is slightly slack and there are minor undulations across the surface. Mould growth is present on the reverse of the lining canvas. The paint layers are stable but have suffered from flaking and loss in the past. These areas have been filled and overpainted. The overpaint appears matte compared to the surrounding original paint, particularly evident in the sitter’s face. There are localised areas of paint with fine, raised cracks but these seem to be related to areas of repair rather than original. The varnish is matte and no longer adequately saturating the paint layers below. The varnish is starting to degrade, becoming opaque and patchy in darker areas of the background.
