A SMALL MOONSHINE STONE 'EGG' GLOWING IN THE DARKSouth Asia, presumably 2000 years old. An amazing small stone with extraordinary properties considered to be magical, carved in the shape of an egg, brilliantly polished and nice to the touch. Nuan Chan Stone (Moonshine Stone), also called 'Sea Ghost' or 'Night Pearl', is neon green in color, consists of some natural fluorochromes, and probably originated in underwater volcanoes. They can easily absorb light (both sunlight and artificial) and glow green in the dark for a long time. Therefore, they were used as important Buddhist amulets and meditation stones. A PALE GREEN JADE BI DISC SYMBOLIZING THE UNIVERSE, COUNTERPART TO THE BI DISCS OF THE ROYAL TOMB OF NANYUEJade. China, late Eastern Zhou to early Western Han dynasty, 3rd to 2nd century BCThe bi disc finely carved in relief with densely arranged nodes reminiscent of guwen (comma spirals, 'grain pattern'), the spaces in between forming diamonds. The stone of a pale green tone with extensive brown areas due to prolonged burial as well as cloudy-white inclusions.The present bi disc is a symbol of the heavens as well as the entire universe, with the guwen-like pattern representing the stellar world, with thousands of tiny 'stars' in a mesmerizing configuration. The cloudy-white inclusions further enhance the effect, appearing as passing clouds in the sky.Similar discs from excavations include a few from the 2nd century BC tomb of Zhao Mo, King of Nanyue, in Guangzhou. One of these, large and with a small hole such as the present lot, was found placed on the chest inside the jade shroud which covered the body of the king: thirteen more discs of decreasing size were arranged in rows over and along the body. In museum collections, similar discs from the Sonneschein collection are in The Art Institute, Chicago: they are published in A. A CELADON AND RUSSET JADE AXE, NEOLITHIC PERIODChina, 4000 to 2500 BC. The blade of flattened rectangular form with rounded edges and a small aperture for suspension. The translucent stone is of a pale celadon tone with areas of white clouding and distinct russet inclusions. The reverse with a series of deeply incised crescent-shaped markings.Provenance: New York trade, USA, by repute acquired from a private estate.Condition: Overall good condition. The stone with russet-colored encrustations, most likely residues from an iron source buried nearby. Some losses, mostly along the edges. The surface finely polished with several areas now silky matt, few intrinsic fissures, and a single large vein has developed into a natural crack.Weight: 144.8 gDimensions: Length 13.9 cm, width 5.9 cm, aperture 0.9 cmKnife- and axe-shaped blades made from stone were probably working tools in Neolithic societies. Jade is hard but brittle, so the blades made from this beautiful material are unlikely to have been put to practical use. Instead, they would have been held by chieftains as symbols of authority. An early 20th century sapphire and diamond five-stone ring, the central round old cut diamond weighing approximately 0.10 - 0.15 carats, flanked by round mixed cut sapphires and mixed cut diamonds, all collet set in yellow metal to a plain polished shank, stamped '18ct', ring size P, weight 3.0gmsCR; One the central diamond, there is a small fracture/chip running from the girdle to the edge of the table, visible under 10x. One of the outer diamonds has a surface reaching fracture, visible under 10x under reflected light. The sapphires show heavy scratching/wear, with nibbles to the facet edges. There is splitting, heavy scratching and wear to the settings, but stones appear secure. Shank is in good order, showing minor misshaping, scratching and wear commensurate with age and use but no signs of splitting or repair. See pictures for further illustration.

A diamond three-stone ring, the central diamond weighing approximately 0.20 carats, with a diamond each side weighing approximately 0.05 carats, collet set in white metal to twist design shoulders and yellow metal shank, stamped '18CT', ring size N, weight 2.3gmsCR: All stones are present and largely in good order. One of the outer stones appears to have a chip or a natural on the girdle, leaving a small gap between the girdle and the mount (this is visible in the first and second images two the left hand stone). Under 10x, slight gaps are visible between the girdles and the mounts of the two outer stones. The mounts themselves seem in good order, no splitting or signs of repair. Shank shows general scratching, light thinning and wear, but no signs of splitting, resizing or repair.

An early 20th century diamond toi et moi diamond ring, comprising two round old cut diamonds, measuring 4.61mm x 2.96mm and 4.67mm x 3.14mm, claw set to diamond set twist shoulders, continuing to a plain polished yellow metal band, ring size O, weight 3.0gmsCR;Please note: Weights are approximate due to the cut of the gemstones. One diamond weighs approximately 0.35 carats, the other weighs approximately 0.40 carats.The smaller stone has a surface reaching fracture approximately 2mm wide, running across the outer table facets, visible with the naked eye. There are a couple of nibbles to the girdle. Approximate clarity P.The larger stone appears to have chip to the girdle, however this may be a natural. No other obvious cracks, chips or surface reaching fractures. Approximate clarity SI.Stones to shoulders are present and in good order.Colour grade is not possible due to the setting, but when viewed face up there is no obvious draw of colour and the diamonds have a good sparkle.

An early 20th century diamond three-stone ring, the central old cushion cut diamond measuring 5.51mm x 4.62mm x 2.99mm, with a further round old cut diamond to each side, claw set in white metal, to tapering plain polished yellow metal shank, stamped '18', ring size O 1/2, weight 2.6gmsCR; Please note: Weights are approximate due to the cut of the gemstones.Central stone weighs approximately 0.60 - 0.70 carats. Diamond to each side weighs approximately 0.30 carats.The central stone shows two large fractures to the girdle, one running between a bottom claw and a side claw (approx. 1.5mm wide) and another running outward from a top claw (approximately 1mm wide). Some nibbling to the facet edges and girdle. Some of the bottom facets have polish marks visible through the table, but no obvious inclusions visible at 10x.One of the outer diamonds has a large fracture running from the table to the girdle. Some nibbling to the girdle, and what appears to be a couple of naturals. The other diamond has a small, surface reaching fracture in the middle of the table, and nibbling to the girdle.Clarity across stones is SI-P.

A Victorian diamond marquise cluster ring, the central old cut diamond measuring approximately 4.5mm W x 2.5mm D, within a surround of twenty-four old cut and rose cut diamonds, all claw set in yellow metal, cluster measuring 29mm x 13mm, continuing to scroll shoulders and plain polished shank, stamped '18CT', ring size T 1/2, weight 5.0gmsCR; Central stone approx. clarity P The stone immediately below the central diamond (as pictured) has an approximate clarity of P. The other stones in the cluster vary, none lower then SI.  Viewed face up, the majority of the stones do not show an obvious draw of colour, are well matched and have a good sparkle - a few of the diamonds (pictured to the border lower right) have a slight draw of yellow visible with the naked eye. Small chips and nibbles throughout, mostly concentrated to the girdles.

A Victorian five-stone diamond ring, the central old cut diamond measuring 4.88mm W x 2.44mm D, with two further graduated old cut diamonds to each side, claw set in yellow metal to a pierced scrolling mount, plain polished unmarked shank, size N, weight 2.6gmsCR; Central diamond shows a chip/fracture to the girdle to the girdle. The diamonds to the shoulders show a few nibbles/small chips to the girdle - one shows a chip to the top of the table, running from the girdle to the table. The two stones either side of the central diamond appear in good order, with no obvious cracks, chips or losses. Stones appear secure. Scrolling gallery appears largely in good order, small split just beneath the central diamond, but no other splits, major damage or repair. Shank shows some thinning and some slight misshaping - there are signs that the shank may have been repaired or resized at some stage. Accurate colour grade cannot be provided due to the setting, however when viewed face up, the stone appears white and sparkly with no obvious draw of colour. An early 20th century three stone diamond ring, the central round cut diamond measuring 4.57mm W x 2.84mm D, with a further round cut diamond to each side, all set in white metal, continuing to tapering shoulders and plain polished yellow metal shank, ring size I 1/2, weight 1.6gmsCR; There are a couple of fractures to the central diamond, running across a few of the star facets, emanating from beneath a claw. Some nibbling to the girdle. One of the outer diamonds shows nibbling to the girdle. Claws and settings are largely in good order, a couple of the claws on the outer stones are heavily worn, however the stones are secure. Shank in good order, showing scratching and wear commensurate with age and use, but no signs of splitting or repair.Central diamond approximate clarity P. One of the outer stones has an approximate clarity of SI, the other VS. Stones require professional cleaning, accurate colour grading not possible due to build up. When viewed face up, there is not an obvious draw of colour.

An Art Deco sapphire and diamond ring, the central rectangular cushion cut blue sapphire measuring 11.6mm x 10.6mm x 6.0mm (weighing 5.99 carats), claw set in 18ct white gold to diamond set stepped shoulders, continuing to a plain polished 18ct white gold shank, ring size N, weight 4.7gms, with an accompanying blue leather box for 'Hamilton & Co Ltd Jewellers & Silversmiths Calcutta, Delhi & Simla' Condition Report; Very small nibble to the girdle above the bottom left claw as pictured. No other cracks, chips or nibbles. Very light scratching and wear to central stone. All diamonds are present and in tact, no cracks, chips or losses. All claws and settings appear secure, no splitting, thinning or signs of repair. Shank shows some scratching and wear, commensurate with age and use, but no thinning, spitting or repair.No evidence of heat treatment to the sapphire.This sapphire is accompanied by a certificate by The Gem and Pearl Laboratory (21739) stating that the stone is natural and no heat treatment has been observed - it does not indicate origin.Under 10x there is no obvious windowing and no obvious colour zoning. There are several, fine needle-like inclusions running diagonally across the stone through the table, visible at 10x. They are visible with naked eye, though far less obvious.Diamonds don't show an obvious draw of colour with the naked eye, possibly a slight draw of colour under 10x. Average clarity SI. Collection of Leonardo Vigorelli, Bergamo, acquired from the above. Arturo Schwarz (1924-2021) was an Italian scholar, art historian, poet, writer, lecturer, art consultant and curator of international exhibitions. He lived in Milan, where he amassed a large collection of Dada and Surrealist art, including many works by personal friends such as Marcel Duchamp, Andre Breton, Man Ray, and Jean Arp. In 1975, Schwarz started working as curator and writer, writing extensive publications on the work of Marcel Duchamp, as well as books and numerous essays on the Kabbalah, Tantrism, alchemy, prehistoric and tribal art, and Asian art and philosophy. His 1977 book on Man Ray's works and life was the first to reveal Ray's real name.Condition: Displaying well, condition overall as expected and commensurate with age.
