Three Autograph letters, all on headed notecard, signed Three Autograph letters, all on headed notecard, signed ("A Conan Doyle"), to a journalist named Russell Goodwin-Smith who was writing a piece about the author, in which he discusses his wish not to be celebrated solely for Sherlock Holmes, saying "you might care to point out that apart from Sherlock Holmes I have written the Brigadier Gerard stories, the Professor Challenger books, a long line of historical novels including The White Company and Rodney Stone a book of poems, several successful dramas 'the Speckled Band' and much else", he also touches upon his historical non-fiction works, mentioning "the histories of the Boer War and of the Great War", as well as listing his work on Spiritualism and rescue of "two men falsley condemned Oscar Slater and George Edalji" amongst his greatest achievements. Doyle closes the letter by asserting that he gets "a little restive at being forever coupled with Holmes", 15 Buckingham Palace Mansions; the second, sent after the article has been written, expressing his opinion that it is "a charming one - too flattering but that will restore the balance of many that come my way", he goes on to say that he is "a strong man with a J pen and a weakling with a Waverley", Windlesham; and one other, a brief note to Mr. Goodwin-Smith ("R. Goodwin Smith"), confirming his availability for an appointment, 15 Buckingham Palace Mansions, April 1912; four pages, printed headings, oblong 8vo, [1912 and c.1919-1926] (3) ---- RARE LETTER BY DOYLE DISCUSSING SHERLOCK HOLMES AND HIS OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS. Sherlock Holmes was, and is, Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous creation, however the author would seldom discuss the works in his letters. This correspondence shows a rare case of Doyle expressing his thoughts about Holmes as well as other professional and personal achievements he views to be of equal or greater importance. Provenance: Left to the vendor's family in the will of Mr. Russell Goodwin-Smith, the recipient of these letters.
