FULVIO BIANCONI (ITALIAN 1915-1996) FOR VENINI, MURANO, A 'PEZZATO' GLASS BOWL IN THE PARIGI COLOURWAY With tesserae in blue, red, green and amber With circular acid stamp 'Venini Murano Italia', and foil label to the underside 8cm high, 18.5cm long Note: One of the most famous post-war Italian graphic designers, Fulvio Bianconi began his career learning the art of decorating glass at the workshops of Murano under the directorship of Michael Pinto, where he returned later in life to begin his fruitful product design career and establish Murano as the place for production of artistic glass around the globe. Before his innovations, glass had been used for utilitarian purposes. Bianconi pushed the limits of glassmaking in the traditional sense and material of glass itself by transforming it in both theory and practice. His works encompassing lamps, vases, and sculptural objects were developed coming out of his illustrious graphic design positions at some of the most prestigious publishing houses in Italy, who allowed him to create work for the sake of exploration. The Pezzato range was one of the most successful designs that Fulvio Bianconi created for Venini. Bianconi used a glass mosaic in various ways producing brilliant chromatic effects. These vases were first exhibited at the 25th Venice Biennale in 1950. The glass tesserae are first made from coloured glass canes flattened and cut to various sizes before being arranged into a mosaic. The mosaic is then heated on a fire stone to weld the different colours together. They are then picked up on a blank to form the walls of the final piece. The glass is then blown and hot worked into the desired form. Most of the designs were in transparent glass but there are also some made from a combination of opaque pasta vitrea and transparent tesserae which became known as 'Arlecchino' designs and had the greatest chromatic brilliance. Condition Report: Some scratches to the foot and a little wear to the label.Condition Report Disclaimer
