M.A. VICAR OF CHATTON/ for a history of the discovery of this coffin vide M.S. sent to the a. society by I. Cook and an abstract form the same given in the first vol of Arch:Aeliana page 99. The wooden lid 26cms (10 1/4in.). With cutting from Tomlinson's Guide Wooler to Chillingham detailing the discovery on 6th March 1814 of a stone coffin on the north side of the Church of the Holy Cross Catton, containing the remains of a human body, which is supposed to have been one of the followers of Robert The Bruce who had fallen in 1318 during an invasion of Northumberland, being under excommunication, was buried in the least hallowed part of the church yard.
