A 1930's Art Deco standard lamp constructed from oar's. The central oar acting as a column rising to shade having 3 oar paddle ends as the supports. The vendor's father being a record winning Cox in an Oxford rowing team. Measures 194 cm x 55 cm. The vendor's father was at the St Catherine's Society in Oxford from 1946 to 1952. (Now St Catherine's College) He coxed for the college during his time there. The boat cabinet is a centre section from a new Shell racing eight he was coxing when they hit a submerged log at full speed and badly damaged the box singing the boat. It was beyond repair so he took a section and made the cupboard. The lamp is an oar shaft and 3 blades also taken from teh broken pile at the college. In Oxford on the Isis (Thames) there I a section called the gut. It is a chicane between stone walls. He got gong through there to a fine art. Blades within an inch of the walls. While practicing they hit the walls with the blades a number of times. This usually lead to broken blades. He and the 2 other college crews still hold an Oxford rowing record. All boats bumped on all nights of eights week in the bumps races. They used to race six nights. Now they race less only 4 I believe. The record still stands
