Lucas Tandokwazi Sithole. MOTHER AND CHILD, 1978 (LS7820). signed. kiaat on a liquid steel base. Literature: . F. F. Haenggi, Lucas Sithole, Gallery 21 and The Haenggi Foundation: Johannesburg, 1979, listed on page 234. Provenance:. Gallery 21, Johannesburg, 1978. Note: “One day in early 1960 when Adler Fielding Gallery was a mere tin shed in the roof garden of the old Pim’s Buildings in Kruis Street… long since demolished… a young, shy, very self-effacing African walked timidly into our workshops. He very hesitantly opened the canvas bag he was carrying and pulled out two woodcarvings of African women…… Lawrence and I offered him fifteen guineas apiece for the works, which he humbly and gladly accepted. We also asked him to bring everything he did to us. The timid young man with the shy smile that we were to know so well was well on the road to fame.”(Aubrey Fielding, Major. Reminiscences: 1960 -1967)[i]Lucas Sithole, respected student at the renowned Polly Street Art Centre and later, member of the Amadlozi group, produced a formidable body of work in his lifetime. Taking its name from the Zulu term meaning Spirits of our Ancestors, the collective, Amadlozi, brought together iconic artists Sydney Khumalo, Ezrom Legae, Cecil Skotnes, Edoardo Villa and others in their exploration of African themes and aesthetics.Initially trained as a carpenter and craftsman, Sithole challenged the sculptural possibilities of several media, including stone, metals and indigenous woods. The elongated and sinuous figure shaped by African idiom, apparent in both Mother and Child and Standing Figure, emerged in many of Sithole’s carved wooden works from as early as the mid 1950s. These resonant effigies are distinctive in their sensitivity, economy and fluidity. Mother and Child and Standing Figure were created in the late 1970s and gifted directly to the current owner in 1979. Lucas Sithole is represented in both local and international art institutions, including Museum der Weltkulturen, Frankfurt, Germany. An estimated quarter of his work can be found in collections outside of South Africa[ii]. s.c.. height (excluding the base): 77cm. Comments/Condition:. minor surface dirt and abrasions, otherwise good
