Lot 25

A Late 18th Century or Early 19th Century Printed and Hand-Coloured Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on wooden sticks, plain save for bone thumb guards. The recto shows a lady dressed in pink leaning out of a tower window, waving a white handkerchief to attract the attention of the gentleman playing an instrument under her window, a servant holding his master's horse under a stone archway to the side. Gilded foil shapes decorate the top border. At the foot of the tree to the left, printed letters are evident but not clear ''B II 1283''. The verso is plain cream. Guard length 10 inches or 25.5cm. Contained in an 18th century pink card fan tubeThe frame is sound, the leaf is grubby and most of the foil shapes are lost, and the leaf has some small damages at these points.

A Fine Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture minutely carved and pierced with cherubs and birds, the gorge particularly elaborate. The central carved ivory cartouche shows a hunter with his dog and gun. The side vignettes are carved with rabbits and game birds. The intricate lattice around them are carved with squirrels, birds, and game birds, many being picked out in colour. The gorge is extensively gilded. The velum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, depicts a charming scene of sleeping cherubs having their wings clipped and their bows and arrows spirited away, the Goddess Diana perched on a cloud in the sky above. The verso is painted with an autumnal scene of a bird and stone columns. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28.5cmVery good, the fan very slightly splayed when viewed closed.

Lot 53

A Large Late 19th Century White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture shaped and delicately gilded, mainly with classical swags, the guards with the addition of painted portraits, a young man to the upper guard and his lady to the other. Centrally to the gorge is a delicate painting of a stone garden ornament with roses strewn at the base. The double silk leaf, painted with classical borders with gilt highlights, and powder blue panels, three painted features bordered with tiny gold sequins, and some tambour metal threads. Centrally, a lady is seated in the garden, holding an open fan coquettishly to her face, as a suitor leans on a stone balustrade trying to catch her attention. To each side of this scene are smaller vignettes each with a winged cherub in flight, one bearing a flaming torch, the other chasing white doves. Two swans feature below these vignettes. The verso is plain save for simple classical designs. Guard length 12.75 inches or 32.5cm. Together with a card fan box covered in paper featuring flowers and birds; and A Late 19th Century White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture plain, the cream silk leaf painted with large cream flowers, possibly magnolia, surrounded by leaves in shade soft green and pink, smaller blossoms on slender branches, the whole close to a river bank. The verso is a plain cream cotton. Cream silk tassel, knotted and fringed. Guard length 12.5 inches or 32cm. Together with a large pale blue card fan box (2)Fan 1 - Humidity issues, mainly seen from the verso, which has split the silk and come through as brown staining to the recto in places. Fan 2 - Generally very good, pastel colours but strong, no noticeable staining to either recto or cream verso, foxing here and there but very very slight.

An Ivory Fan Dated 1887, mounted with a double velum leaf, depicting a Mediterranean stone balcony beside an ornate stone arch, with colourful woven rugs hanging over the balustrade, a panel carved with initials (KS?), the verso painted with scrolling, two vignettes containing the dates 1877 and 1887, a further larger vignette containing the initials MC. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm. Together with a cream card fan box, the inner lid bearing the adhesive label for Maison Ernest Kees, ParisGood strong colour, generally clean, the verso being lightly marked at the top end of at least seven folds. The box lid is defective at both ends.

Circa 1840's, An Unusual Mother-of-Pearl Fan, with pierced and brightly gilded sticks, the double chromolithograph leaf a dramatic depiction of boats of varying sizes and structures on the sea, occupied with all manner of people, cherubs with flower garlands flying overhead. To the right, a stone column incised with the words ''A La Vie A la Mort'', a lady clinging on in fear, a dog at her side, and the figure of The Grim Reaper with his sickle attempting to remove her from safety. The reserves feature cherubs in sailing boats, the sails impressed with the words ''Tout passe avec le temps, l'amitie ne passe pas'', the gold and floral border alternating with cherubs. The verso is a more relaxing countryside scene with rural people tending to their sheep and cattle. A thin acid green tassel adorns the gold metal loop. Guard length 10.5 inches or 27cmThe monture is bright and sound. Slight rubbing to some folds and the sides are very slightly crinkled.

A Ball at Saint Cyr, 22nd February 1908: A Commemorative Fan, mounted on stained wooden sticks with a paper leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, produced for the annual Ball held at the Saint Cyr Military Academy. Designed and signed by Michel Klecker, depicting the stone entrance to the Academy, and soldiers dressed in uniforms worn in both 1808 and 1908. The verso is stamped ''Bail Paris Cotillon''. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm See also lots….and Very good, crisp leaf.

An Early 19th Century Wooden Fan, mounted with a sea green double paper leaf, completely plain save for a silver top border. Guard length 9 inches or 23cm; A Late 18th Century Carved And Pierced Wood Brisé Fan, the top half of all sticks carved and pierced with classical designs, some colour highlights. A central applied vignette of a gravure on paper shows a pensive lady in classical flowing robes, a dog at her feet. To each side, a rectangular vignette painted onto the sticks, containing stylised swags and flowers. The verso is plain. Bone thumb guards. Twenty-eight inner stick plus two guards. Guard length 9.5inches or 24cm; A Late 18th Century Wood Brisé Fan, carved and pierced throughout with roundels and a central shield containing initials. Twenty-seven inner sticks and two guards. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm; and A Late 18th Century Wood Brisé Fan, with Chinoiserie style decoration, the twenty four inner sticks and two guards carved and pierced and featuring 6 ovals. Centrally, the applied paper panel depicts a rural scene with rocks, stylised trees, a bridge spanning a river on which basic boats are travelling. A multi storey pagoda style building sits atop the rocks. To the left, however, is a much more European style building with a stone tower, and castellated walls behind. The verso is plain. Guard length 11 inches or 27.5cm (4)Fan 1 - Generally good, some rubbing to the folds. Fan 2 - The ribbon needs replacing. One stick is broken at the tip and repaired on the verso. Several of the stick tips have loss. Fan 3 - The upper guard has part of the next stick in stuck to it, and the guard itself has damage. The lower guard has 2 metal plate repairs. At least 3 of the inner sticks have losses. The ribbon needs replacing. Fan 4 - At least 2 sticks are missing, the large ovals are missing one stick at each side.

Lot 62

An Ivory Fan Circa 1830's, the ivory monture pierced, silvered and gilt, with mother-of-pearl thumb guards. The double leaf, printed and hand coloured, shows a country wedding procession, the bride seated on a mule, a piper leading the way together with a man already imbibing. A stone in the reserves to the left bears an indistinct signature. The verso shows a couple in the countryside, the man reading, the lady having collected flowers, a dog playing at their fee. To the left of the scene the leaf is signed, possibly Guy Andrez, the same as on the recto. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cmSome flecks in the sticks so this could possibly be bone. Brown staining to the verso, probably humidity, some slight loss to the paper on the left of the recto.

Lot 30

The Judgement of Paris: A Final Quarter 18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved, pierced and painted in a very pale lilac, the gorge in intricate bands with chinoiserie figures to the centre, the velum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise and painted mainly in subtle grey and brown with touches of subdued green and purple. The recto depicts Paris offering to the apple to Venus, the reserves with further vignettes of rural scenes with ruins and other stone buildings, probably Italian. The verso depicts a lakeside scene with small boats, a larger town in the distance, again suggesting Italy. Guard length 11inches or 28cm. Together with a modern card fan boxGood, monture appears intact, the folds are slightly rubbed.

Lot 38

A Very Unusual Late 18th Century Ivory Fan, with carved and pierced, gilded and painted sticks, mounted à l'Anglaise with a velum leaf the recto painted in two panels (reminiscent of a cabriolet leaf) with Chinoiserie and European figures undertaking daily outdoor activities through the changing seasons, and illustrating different levels of society. The verso depicts a sailing boat approaching a stone tower perching on an isolated rock, further Chinoiserie figures to the reserves. The gorge is of particular note, with side panels colourfully painted with Chinoiserie figures, a central cartouche of bare ivory intricately carved with figures, all with gold borders, carved and painted in a different style, giving detail to the fan when viewed closed. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm. Together with a modern card fan box Exhibited in 2006 at Marble Hill House, Twickenham.Good. Colour strong. Some rubbing to the paint on the lower guards. Some rubbing to the folds.
