Lot 1311
A very fine Thai stone head of Buddha, finely carved in the Sukhothai style with a sensitive contemplative expression, early Ayuthhaya period, (14th-early 16th century). In good condition with some typical wear and loss commensurate with age. Mounted on a museum quality metal stand, 10 1/4'' tall.

A very rare male chastity belt dating: 18th Century provenance: Turkey Iron structure with the purpose of binding the loins; provided at the front part with a compartment for the male member, mounted on a plaque connected to the rest of the structure by two iron buckles at the upper part and, at the lower part, by an articulated, iron band. The margins of the plaques are strengthened by an iron, riveted band with hemmed and festooned borders. The front compartment is divided into two small compartments with separate doors, the upper one used to contain a cleaning stone, the lower one to contain the member. The front plaque provided with lock which used to block the opening of the belt is now missing. Small parts missing. Assembled on an iron support. Antique chastity belts, specially male ones, are extremely scarce. We say that, in Europe, similar items were used during the Crusades to guarantee knights, left for the Holy Lands, and their wives mutual faithfulness. Recently though, the existence and use of chastity belts has been questioned. In 17th and 18th Century, chastity belts were used not only to guarantee faithfulness, but also to protect women from rape, to prevent prostitutes not paying taxes to practise their profession, to prevent onanism (considered a pathology in 19th century), and protect from sexually transmitted diseases. Similar belts could have also been used to protect the central part of the body during combats. dimensions: height 34 cm.

A painted set of armour and saddle dating: 18th Century provenance: China The bust of the armour consisting in eight moulded plaques, with straps, used to bind the lower part of the body, and provided with two more, larger plaques to protect the chest and the back; all plaques made of stiff, boiled leather, featuring relieved bands at the front surface, finely hand painted with geometrical motifs and small flower in red and beige, on black ground; at the centre of the chest-plaque are two large spirals. The skirt provided with rows of small scales of boiled leather painted en suite, with leather straps. Wooden and leather saddle, this one too painted in black and decorated en suite with the armour in red and beige, and cartouches featuring spirals. The saddle is complete with wooden stirrups worked en suite. Scarce ensemble. See "A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor" by G.C. Stone; on page 59 are three similar armour, they are presented as Lolo armour from Sichuan (coll. of the Field Museum of Chicago). dimensions: height 1 cm.

A Chinese coral snuff bottle, carved with leaves and blossom, yellow metal handle, spoon inset with green stone - H5.5cm, W3.5cm CONDITION REPORT: Snuff bottle has chip to flower petal around opening. Hollowing is drilled to 3cms and a pin prick to one side. Surface shows white patches to recesses. Bottle is late 19th/early 20th century and is carved all over, including base. no signature - approx total gross weight 40.7g

(1835 - 1919) inscription to bottom, 'Jurist, philanthropist, churchman, who laid the corner stone of this church, this window was erected by his wife Elizabeth and his daughters May Mackenzie and Katherine Rhinelander', the central section depicting Pentecost, the upper scene showing Moses with the commandments and the lower, council scene, 'Luther at the diet of worms', with Hardman lozenge verso, 51cm x 20.5cm.
