AN ENGLISH ALTO RELIEVO STONE TABLET FROM THE OVERMANTEL OF THE GREAT HALL AT BLITHFIELD HALL, STAFFORDSHIRE, ATTIBUTED TO JAMES TRUBSHAW, C1820 135 x 165cmProvenance: Commissioedn by William Bagot, 2nd Baron Bagot (1778-1856) thence by descent to Nancy, Lady Bagot (d 2014).On inheriting Blithfield in 1798 the young Lord Bagot embarked on an extensive remodelling of the house in the fashionable Regency Gothic-Medieval style. A romantic and scholarly man who, unlike his two predecessors, was uninterested in politics but shared their intellectual ability and other interests, he was particularly conscious of the Bagot family's exceptionally long association with the ancient Staffordshire seat, in its beautiful setting. Lord Bagot commissioned the watercolourist and part-time architect John Buckler (1770-1851) to make drawings and later employed him to rebuild his second seat, Pool Park in North Wales. The alterations and decoration at Blithfield were the responsibility of the architect-builder James Trubshaw (1773-1853) whose grandfather and great grandfather (Richard and Charles Cope Trubshaw) had together Gothicised the house in the mid 18th century. James Trubshaw studied sculpture under Richard Westmacott the elder (1747-1808) and later supervised the building work at William Beckford's Fonthill Abbey before employment at both Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, where he assembled the Grand Staircase. Returning to his native Staffordshire in 1800 he worked on several important houses in the area including carving a number of wall tablets similar to the present example in the local sandstone. The vaulted Great Hall at Blithfield, approached along an enclosed cloister walk, retains its fine plasterwork interior by Francis Bernasconi (1762-1841) and is complete but for the present tablet that was removed prior to the date of the house first being listed (Grade I) in January 1953.++Extensive damage. Old flaking brown paint
A 9 ct gold bar brooch, set with central blue stone framed by seed pearls, struck 9 ct, gross weight 3.6 grams, together with a pair of topaz and seed pearl pendant earrings on gold coloured backing (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The pearl cluster 11.5 mm. Note there is one pearl missing. The blue stone seems to be in good order as do the surfaces of the small pearls. The bar brooch itself is in good condition as is the chain and safety clasp. Weight 3.3 grams. Earrings weight 5.8 grams. Height 34 mm excluding ball and ear wire. One earring has a slight blemish and slight discolouration to the centre left opal. All settings seem solid. The second earring has slight discolouration to the opals which are a little yellow in places. This may simply be dirt we are not sure. The earrings are not hallmarked and have not been tested.
A Grand Tour style variegated marble model of a Roman bath, 19th century, the carved roll top and loop form handles upon shaped rectangular supports, width 40 cm, height 17 cm, depth 18 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This appears to be in good order throughout with no obvious faults. The underside of the rim has very few nibbles and very slight undulations which only become apparent when touched. There is a dark patch to one side of the rim which looks to have been repaired but under close inspection it is just a natural striation of the stone. Overall this piece is in good order, there are no large chips, cracks or obvious restorations.
An 18 ct gold sapphire and diamond ring, with oval sapphire surrounded by +/- 1 carat of diamonds, size R (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The ring is fully hallmarked for Sheffield 1984. All stones are secure in their mounts. The sapphire appears to be in good condition. The sapphire is in generally good condition when viewed with the naked eye. When inspected with a loop there are some very minor nibbles to the sharp edges of the facets but no significant issues. The ring shank is not significantly worn. The ring has been entered from a local private source and we are not aware that the sapphire has been treated in any way. In our opinion the stone is navy blue.
A Russian silver enamelled and jewelled cigarette case, with classical scene, 84 Kokoshnik mark, Moscow (1908-1926), maker HT, 208 grams. 105 mm x 85 mm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: At the top centre of the enamel panel there is a 12 mm x 2 mm repaired patch. On the enamel panel with the buildings there are very tiny nibbles on the top right hand side, these are not notable to the naked eye but can be seen using a jewellers loupe. In our opinion these are not detrimental. The interior would have had two bands to hold the cigarettes, these are now missing. On the right hand side of the lower section of enamel metalwork just above the jewelling there is a line across the silver, this looks like it was produced in its manufacture and not a later repair. There is a similar line on the opposing side. The gilding on the tassels on the left hand side is almost completely erased. Approximately 1 cm from the opening clasp on the main picture there is a 2 cm line which looks like a fracture but using a jewellers loupe this again appears to be a manufacturing flaw. There is a small cluster of jewels just above the left hand side of the lower enamel panel and to the right of these jewels there are two very small apertures which may or may not have taken a small stone. These apertures are now vacant. There is a similar vacant aperture on the right hand side of the case which is located just below the lower green stone, again this is vacant. In general an attractive piece. All faults listed should be visible using the zoom facility on the website.
A pair of Chinese jade cluster earrings, with mounts to simulate diamonds, set in white gold coloured metal. Diameter +/- 15 mm. CONDITION REPORT: Combined weight 6.9 grams. Each stone diameter approximately 9 mm. Height approximately 4 mm. We have not tested the metal but the vendor did tell us that these were white gold.
A Chinese jade circular pendant, with central Buddha. Diameter 50 mm. CONDITION REPORT: The jade Buddha in the centre is in good order with no obvious faults. The striations of the natural stone can be seen. The outer jade ring appears to be free from any major issues but using a jewellers loupe you can see numerous tiny surface scratches on the top. Some of these are surface scratches and some are just the natural stone itself. The gold coloured metal is not of the highest quality and has been varnished at some time, the varnish seems to be deteriorating. The gold coloured metal is not stamped with any marks.
A 9 ct gold Art Deco green stone set brooch. Length 70 mm. CONDITION REPORT: Weight 6 grams. Stone length 30 mm, width 10 mm, height approx 3 mm (a little difficult to ascertain due to mount). The condition of the stone is generally good with only very minor surface marks. All metalwork is in good order with no damage, repairs or restoration.
A Chinese white gold coloured metal ring, stamped "18K", the tiered setting with large black opal. Opal 25 mm x 15 mm, size L (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: We cannot say whether the stone is a doublet or not as it is difficult to see the sides and back of the stone due to the mount. We have had a good look at the surface with a magnifying glass and can only see one small scratch to the edge of the opal which runs for approximately 2.5 mm. It is right at the edge by the mount. Weight 12.2 grams.
A Chinese 18 ct white gold jade and diamond set ring, stamped "18K", size K/L. CONDITION REPORT: Weight 5.5 grams. Jade dimensions 9 mm x 7 mm. The height of the stone from the side of the mount from to the top is approximately 4 mm. The ring is in first class condition. It does not appear to have had any significant wear. There are no scratches to the jade.
