David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Captain John Young" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood John W. Young Commemorative Cover postmarked March 11, 1995. Considered to be one of America's most experienced space travelers, astronaut John Watts Young has made six different NASA flights. Young's first space mission, Gemini 3, was made with veteran astronaut Gus Grissom on March 23, 1965. The following year, Young and Michael Collins teamed up on Gemini 10, in which they rendezvoused with two Agena spacecraft and set a record altitude of 475 miles. In May 1969, as command module pilot for Apollo 10, Young orbited in Charlie Brown while his fellow crewmen took the lunar module Snoopy to within 10 miles of the Moon -- a mission that served as a dress rehearsal for the first actual lunar landing in July. Three years later, Young finally set foot on the Moon himself when he commanded Apollo 16. Traveling nearly 17 miles in a lunar rover, he and Charles Duke spent three days on the Moon's surface setting up experiments and collecting over 200 pounds of Moon rocks. On April 12, 1981 -- exactly 20 years after Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space -- Young made his fifth NASA flight. Together with Robert Crippen, he flew on the premier mission in NASA's Space Shuttle program. From November 28 to December 8, 1983, Young commanded his second Shuttle mission, STS-9, which brought his total hours in space to 835. Commenting about his illustrious career during an interview, Young once stated, "I can't think of another single job I'd rather have -- in this world or out of it. Image Size: 18.5 x 20.75 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 27 in. Unframed. (B15082)

Paul Calle (American, 1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "1920s - Archeology Reveals Past Glories" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century series 60c Archaeology Reveals Past Glories stamp issued March 16, 1998. One of the greatest archeological finds of the 20th century was made in 1922 -- the discovery of the undisturbed tomb of Tutankhamen by Britain's Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter. Tutankhamen, a pharaoh of Egypt's 18th Dynasty, died around 1350 B.C. at the tender age of 18 or 19. For over 3,000 years Tutankhamen's tomb had lain forgotten in the harsh desert of the Valley of the Kings. Not since the discovery of the Rosetta Stone had the field of archaeology been so abuzz with excitement. Thousands of priceless objects were found in the tomb -- including the pharaoh's expertly-preserved mummified body and the solid gold sarcophagus. As newspapers around the globe feverishly covered the event, the whole world was soon caught up in the fascinating details concerning the discovery of the long-dead pharaoh and his fabulous treasures. Shannon Stirnweis (Arizona, New York, New Hampshire Oregon, B. 1931) "Fort Henry" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Fort Henry stamp issued June 30, 1983. Once the early explorers and settlers of Canada had established roots in the New World, they soon realized they must somehow protect their holdings. But, whether they came from France, England ... or from any of the other great European nations, they could not expect aid to arrive quickly from an army or navy stationed thousands of miles away in the Mother Country. Therefore, it became necessary for the nations to erect forts in the New World to protect the territories their explorers and settlers had claimed for the homeland. One fort built to guard British interests in Canada was Fort Henry. Fort Henry was erected in 1813 and is located at Kingston, Ontario, on a strategically important peninsula where the British operated an important port and naval base on the St. Lawrence River. It was the only fort to be built of a series of six detached casemated redoubts which were planned to be built in the early nineteenth century at this location. Over the years, Fort Henry was gradually enlarged, and after the construction of the Rideau Canal, the fort was replaced by a new stone fort, completed in 1836. Fort Henry was garrisoned until 1890, but it later fell into disuse. However, in 1939, it ws completely restored and today is a popular tourist attraction. Image Size: 19.5 x 17 in. Overall Size: 23 x 19.75 in. Unframed. (B08177)
