Lot 202

George V, proof crown, 1935, raised error edge, bare head l., rev. stylized St. George and the dragon in Art-Deco fashion, struck in .925-fine silver (S.4050; L&S.48; ESC.380 [R5] with edge inscription out of order, in error), practically mint state, boldly struck with reflective surfaces and somewhat frosted motifs, pleasing light pinkish gold toning, seldom offered for sale these days This is a most curious and very rare error, particularly so as it occurs on a proof issue, not on commercial strikes for which the mint used numerous dies. The error is dramatic, too; the large, raised letters of the edge inscription read out of order as follows: DECUS ANNO REGNI ET TUTAMEN XXI with a stop before and after XXI. Clearly the steel edge fillet, or band, was in sections, here with ANNO REGNI on one band incorrectly inserted when the legend was assembled for the edge. Linecar & Stone designated it as R7 back in 1968, but a few more examples have turned up since then, most of them now long held in older collections.
