Portrait miniature of Elisabeth June Restall, circa 1942, oval watercolour on ivory, head & shoulders portrait of a pretty young lady with long dark hair worn in two plaits, wearing a rounded-necked blue and pink floral-patterned blouse, with a circular blue stone brooch at neck, signed lower left, 7 x 5.5cm (2.5 x 2.25ins), oval white metal pendant frame, glazed, together with an unsigned oval portrait miniature of Elisabeth June Restall as a baby, watercolour and gouache on ivory, head and shoulders portrait of a chubby baby with blonde hair, 7.5 x 6cm (3 x 2.25ins), oval gold coloured pendant frame, mounted in a velvet-lined case, with double flaps to front and stand to back, rubbed and one hinge broken, plus a small oval daguerrotype of a female relative, mounted in an embossed case Alice May Cook was a painter, miniaturist and book illustrator, who studied at St John's Wood School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. A rare crossbow 'Nu', Eastern Han dynasty, the mechanism intact, with green patina and retained in its wooden arm, with traces of the scale, the bow part no longer present, 54cm long, 21cm high In addition to the buyer's premium of 27% (22.5% + VAT) payable on the Hammer Price, this lot is also subject to import VAT at the reduced rate of 5%, payable on the Hammer Price. This indicates that the lot has been imported from outside the European Union. The unit for calculating the bow's strength is called 'shi' or 'a stone'. According to records, bows are rated as one, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, ten, twelve stones, and so on. The most common is six stones, the range being approximately two hundred and sixty meters.

Restoration at the left side , remnant of polychromie, 19cm wide; and stand (2) Other Notes: Like most of these sculptures, the shoulders are wide and the face is round. The style is similar to works from the Shandong area. The central carving has a main Buddha figure. According to Buddhist traditional canon the main statue of Buddha is usually in the centre, with disciples symmetrically distributed; the right side of the Mandorla is missing, the left side Buddha without hair accessories, wide forehead, micro-closed eyes, the right hand of the main Buddha is positioned on the chest and the left hand is placed on the leg. Restoration on the left side, remnant of polychrome.
