A VICTORIAN SCOTTISH DIRK, 25cm fullered blade with faceted back edge, characteristic white metal mounted hilt, the pommel set with a faceted orange stone, carved wooden grip decorated with basket weave and set with brass studs, contained in its white metal mounted leather scabbard, two of the mounts decorated with thistles, complete with companion knife and fork decorated to match. Mounts painted gold, thistle lacking from upper mount and chape lacking.

A SINHALESE OR CEYLONESE KASTANE OR SHORT SWORD, 36cm curved blade with faceted back edge, inlaid in brass and chiselled with a geometric design, characteristic white metal hilt decorated with scrolling foliage and geometric designs, the various quillons and terminals formed into mythical beasts or simah, the pommel of typical open mouthed crested simah form with semi-precious pink stone eyes, one lacking, contained in its white metal panelled scabbard decorated with scrolling foliage within geometric borders, a grotesque mask adorns the scabbard just below the throat. Late 19th or 20th Century.
A SINHALESE OR CEYLONESE KASTANE OR SHORT SWORD, 37.5cm curved fullered blade, patinated and chipped, with foliate engraved white metal reinforced forte, characteristic hilt decorated with scrolling foliage and geometric designs, the various quillons and terminals formed into mythical beasts or simah, the pommel of typical open mouthed simah form with semi-precious pale red stone eyes, one missing, contained in its worn and repaired copper and white metal panelled scabbard decorated with geometric borders, flower heads and scrolling foliage. Late 19th or 20th Century.

PNG, Ramu River, rare shield, 19th century stone carved oval shield, the top carved with a raised wedge and a design of eyes, zoomorphic forms, circle motives and an anthropomorphic face. The plane decorated with two larger carved diamond shaped forms with a star- and diamond shape within, both with indentations on the outer rim. The shield painted with natural pigments in black, white and red. Collection of Fred Carasso (1899-1969) an Italian born famous Dutch sculptor and collector of fine Arts, thence by descent. Ex-collection Carel van Lier. The early label number 32 suggests according to grandson Bas van Lier, that this shield was acquired somewhere in the 1920’s. At the back written numbers and the remnants of another old label h. 53,5 cm. [1]
