Georgian English "commonplace book", 218 pages, bound in full vellum, most pages with copious ink inscriptions (several blank leaves), owner inscription to opening page for John Northing Upton, near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, 1796 (faint inscription to lower board for the same, 1806). The book starts from both ends, one side featuring numerous technical illustrations and instructions for cording patterns (including the names and locations of clients). The book includes a number of medical and veterinary recipes (or 'receipts'), including cures for 'wind', 'a surfeit', a 'warbuck or warble', 'a drink for a could'. The owner has recorded his book collection, 'Names and Titles of our Bookes'; his family tree with names and dates of baptisms; local information ('About a Mile from Barnesley There is a Large Stone called Eston Stone Which is a bout 44 yards Round and 4 yds Eye there is 3 Doresteads in is That was but for Curiosity'). Contents good with some general age toning; binding intact and solid with general discolouration
