Follower of ANTOINE PONTHUS-CINIER (France, 1812-1885), last third of the 19th century."Venice".Oil on canvas.Re-coloured.Signed (apocryphal signature) in the lower right corner.Size: 21 x 31 cm; 38 x 48 cm (frame).Venetian Veduta, with gondolier in the foreground crossing the channel. A few figures are crossing the stone bridge, and in the distance the beautiful profile of domes and bell towers is silhouetted against a clear sky. The influence of Ponthus-Cinier, specifically from his Italian period, can be seen in the type of framing chosen and in the palette of soft, Mediterranean tones, as well as a certain romantic bias. It also reflects the long heritage of Italian veduttists who, from Canaletto onwards, immortalised the city. In the present scene, the urban cadence is sublimated, conveying serenity and calm.Antoine Ponthus-Cinier was a French painter born in Lyon on 29 August 1812 and died on 17 January 1885. He is considered one of the leaders of the Lyon neoclassical movement and adopted an Arcadian style. His works cover all the sites of the Lyon region. He reclaimed the heritage of 18th century Vetudist painting as then represented by Giovanni Antonio Canaletto, seeking to bring in a more romantic atmosphere. In 1829 he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he does not seem to have been admitted, and later became a pupil of Paul Delaroche in Paris. He became a renowned painter in 1841, when he won the Second Grand Prix de Rome for a historical landscape with Adam and Eve expelled from the Earthly Paradise. He spent two years in Italy, between 1842 and 1844, and stayed in Florence, Rome, Genoa and Naples. This trip to Italy greatly influenced his artistic production. On his return, he made a long journey through the Dauphinate, the Dombes, Provence, the Alps, Savoy and the Pyrenees, and finally settled in Lyon, where he remained until his death. He became a member of the Société des aquafortistes in Paris, where his engravings were very successful. He exhibited historical and simple landscapes in Lyon between 1837 and 1885, in Paris between 1841 and 1867, in Rouen in 1869 and in Dijon in 1881. The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, Chalon-sur-Saône, Besançon, Brou and Chambéry have works by him.
