§ THOMAS WHALEN (1903-1975) DANCING FIGURES, CIRCA 1930 marble panel, inscribed with monogram (Dimensions: 48.5cm x 68cm)(48.5cm x 68cm)Footnote: Note: Thomas Whalen was born in Leith, Edinburgh, and studied sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art. He worked mainly in wood and stone, carving relief works for churches and public buildings as well as private commissions. Influenced by Eric Gill, Ivan Mestrovic, Carl Milles, as well as French and medieval sculpture, Whalen carried out a number of religious commissions, as well as work for schools, civic venues and power stations. There are works by Whalen in public collections in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Bolton and he exhibited at the RSA from 1930-76, was elected ARSA in 1940, and RSA in 1954.

A cast Bronze Age / Greek Archaic period sword with a narrow triangular blade, thick rounded midrib, rounded tip, scooped shoulders with lateral flanges, lozenge guard above; the grip columnar, stone pommel. Ca. 1320 -1200 BC. Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom period, 19th Dynasty, A well-preserved, tall, and hand-carved wooden USHABTI with a wonderful form displaying a myriad of fine details. The figure stands in mummiform with slender legs, with elbows projecting from its sides. Painted details include a pair of hands holding the symbolic pick and hoe, and a singular column of faint hieroglyphic symbols tracing down the lower body, all atop a layer of faded bitumen. The stylized head dons a tripartite wig that frames a minimalist visage comprised of almond eyes, thin lips, and a broad nose. Wooden ushabti is of a far greater rarity than their stone or faience counterparts due to the rapid rate of decomposition over time. A spectacular example!
