A CHINESE IVORY-HANDLED SILVER PRESENTATION TROWEL AND AN IVORY-HANDLED SILVER-MOUNTED PRESENTATION MALLET, LATE 19th CENTURY, each bearing the inscription, "Presented to Mrs. J. Lees on the occasion of her laying the Foundation Stone of the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Hospital at Tientsin 22nd June 1897", the trowel blade engraved with blossoming boughs, the mallet with silver leaf-cast bands and silver presentation plate, silver tested but unmarked. Length of trowel 27cm Note: a number of lots offered in this auction were acquired by the Reverend Jonathan Lees whose wife was presented with the items in this lot. Lees was born in Manchester in 1835 and died in Worthing in 1902 having served in China with the London Missionary Society between 1862 and 1900.
