Attributed to Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (1723-1792)Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, in a blue banyan and fur capoil on canvas, in a feigned stone cartouche, in a carved wood watergilded frame74 x 60cmProvenance: Horton Lodge, Windsor, Berkshire. The sitter wears a banyan (an informal dressing gown) and a cap which often indicates that the sitter has academic interests. His likeness is shown in a sculpted feigned oval which was quite a common motif in the 1740s.It has been suggested that there are similarities with Reynolds’ earliest work painted when he was still in his native Plymouth, such as the portrait of Walter Kendall in the Fraunces Tavern Museum in New York (D Mannings, 'Sir Joshua Reynolds: A Complete Catalogue of his Works', New Haven and London 2000, p. 286, cat no. 1032, pl. 10).We are grateful to Hugh Belsey for his assistance with the catalogue entry.Martin Postle writes:This does appear to be a potential early Reynolds portrait of c.1743-4, probably no later...it is somewhat reminiscent of Walter Kendall, and also Reginald Pole and Sir William Morice (Mannings pls. 2 & 16).It is likely to be a Devon/Cornish sitter. We are grateful to Dr Martin Postle for his assistance with the catalogue entry. Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The picture is in plane with good tension. The paint layer has a prominent network of age cracks, some of which are raised but currently stable. The varnish is in a poor state. It has degraded with age becoming yellow but also fracturing on a microscopic level leading to opaque hazing across the surface. Old areas of overpaint in the background and collar of the jacket are very matte. There is a layer of surface dirt on the front and reverse. The carved wooden framed has missing elements along the lower edge and losses to the gilding in several areas.

The painting has a network of age cracks but overall it is stable and secure. There are a few small losses at the edges and numerous scuffs and scratches across the surface. The varnish is very yellowed, dirty and matte.
