David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Train Robbery" Signed and dated ('82) lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared in the Fleetwood Trails West Collection of Fine Art Prints as "Train Robbery" published in 1983. Butch Cassidy ... the Sundance Kid ... Kid Curry ... and other notorious Wild West bandits made up the infamous Wild Bunch -- a loose-knit gang that operated from such outlaw strongholds as the Hole in the Wall, Brown's Hole, and Robber's Roost from 1896 to 1901. Although the core of this gang probably never exceeded ten riders at any one time, it is quite likely that more than a hundred outlaws spent brief periods as "Bunchers" during the gang's five years of existence. However, even though the membership may have fluctuated, the leadership of the Wild Bunch remained within the firm grasp of the legendary Butch Cassidy ... a friendly-looking ex-cowhand whose authority was enforced by one of the fastest guns in the West, the Sundance Kid. It was said that the Sundance Kid was so fast, that he could draw a gun "quicker than a snake could flick its tongue." With the speed of "the Kid's" gun, the wily leadership of Butch Cassidy, the dedication of the other riders, and the gang's impossible-to-find hideouts ... the Wild Bunch became one of the most successful gangs of train robbers in the history of the Wild West. Perhaps their most noteworthy train robbery occurred on June 2, 1899 in Wilcox, Wyoming -- near present-day Laramie. It is reported that the Wild Bunch successfully made off with a bounty of nearly $48,000 on that job alone ... truly a considerable sum of money in those days. Size: 18 x 21 in. Unframed. (B07839)

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "The Indian Scout" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared in the Fleetwood Trails West Collection of Fine Art Prints as "The Bozeman Trail" published in 1983. America's pioneers viewed the rolling country of what is now Wyoming and Montana as a vast wasteland ... something to be crossed as quickly as possible on the way to the comfort and riches of the Far West. However, to the Crow Indians these vast prairies were sacred and beautiful. The mightly buffalo grazed the tall bending grasses. Indeed, a treaty signed by the Indians and the U.S. Government at Fort Laramie in 1851 guaranteed Indian rights in these fertile plains. But after gold was discovered in southwestern Montana in 1862, a white man proposed to run wagon trains through this land ... from the Oregon Trail to the northern mountains. The consequences, as the wiser Indians well knew, would be disastrous. For everywhere else on the plains, the coming of the white man had meant the disappearance of the buffalo. The threat to these last herds was intolerable. So, when John Bozeman ... a miner turned trail guide ... blazed a suitable wagon trail to the gold country, Indians successfully turned back the first wagon train. However, on July 1, 1864, Bozeman organized another party and completed the first trip, which only intensified the Indians' anger. As a result, by 1866 three Army forts guarded the trail as it coursed through dangerous Indian country. Size: 18 x 20.75 in. Unframed. (B06239)

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Skylab" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. America's first orbiting space laboratory was launched from Kennedy Space Center on May 14, 1973. Equipped with a wide range of scientific instruments, this outpost in space was developed to test human adaptability to weightlessness, conduct experiments at zero gravity, study a broad view of the earth's surface, and take full spectrum photographs of our universe without the optical distortion of earth's atmosphere. The first manned Skylab mission left Kennedy Space Center May 25, 1973. Astronauts Charles Conrad, Joseph Kerwin, and Paul Weitz spent 28 days aboard Skylab. Most of the mission was spent under adverse conditions repairing the mother ship. Alan Bean, Owen Garriott, and Jack Lousma were the second crew, launched from earth on July 28, 1973. Their mission kept them on board Skylab for 59 days. The final crew of Skylab, Gerald Carr, Edward Gibson, and William Pogue, was launched November 16, 1973, from Kennedy Space Center and returned to earth February 8, 1974. The mission lasted a record 84 days. Image Size: 16.5 x 25.5 in. Overall Size: 18 x 26.75 in. Unframed. (B06898)

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Colonel Frank Borman, USAF" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Frank Borman Commemorative Cover postmarked September 22, 1990. Born in Gary, Indiana, on March 14, 1928, and raised in Arizona, Frank Borman learned to fly at the age of fifteen, went on to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and then earned a Master's Degree in aeronautical engineering from the California Institute of Technology. Pilot training in the U.S. Air Force was followed by his selection as an astronaut for the Gemini and Apollo space programs. In December 1965, Borman accompanied James Lovell on Gemini 7's record fourteen day flight in Earth orbit and participated in the first rendezvous in space with Gemini 6. This critical rendezvous proved to be an important stepping stone to later Apollo missions. On December 21, 1968, aboard Apollo 8, Borman and Lovell were joined by William Anders to become the first men to break free of Earth's gravity and orbit the moon. This mission gave us our first close-up view of the lunar surface and of the back side of the moon. Perhaps even more significantly, Apollo 8 established the technology which permitted succeeding crews to land on the moon. Following his tremendous contributions in the U.S. space program's efforts, Frank Borman retired from NASA in 1970 and went to work for Eastern Airlines. Image Size: 18.25 x 21.25 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 26.75 in. Unframed. (B12638)

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Space Shuttle and Eagle II" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. For centuries, mankind has gazed into the shimmering heavens and dreamed of traveling through the great expanses of outer space . . . to discover the secrets which exist far above his own planet Earth. To assist man in his quest to conquer space, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration was formed in America. Since its beginning in 1958, NASA has been responsible for many remarkable accomplishments. For example, on May 5, 1961, NASA sent Alan Shepard, the first American astronaut, into space. Then, just eight years later, on July 16, 1969, NASA sent the Apollo 11, carrying astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins, on a journey to the Moon. As a result, America became the first nation on earth to put a man on the surface of the moon. In addition, in 1973, NASA was responsible for launching Skylab . . . a space-borne laboratory which circled the earth for nearly seven years. However, NASA's current project -- the famed Space Shuttle -- is perhaps its greatest accomplishment. For, since the first flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia on May 21, 1981, this reusable spacecraft has been landing and taking off again and again with computer-like precision . . . bringing us closer to routine space travel. Image Size: 16.25 x 26.25 in. Overall Size: 24.75 x 33 in. Unframed. (B08300)

Lot 332

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Edwin Aldrin" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. Commemorative Cover postmarked January 20, 1979. On July 20, 1969, Edwin Aldrin soared into the history books when he successfully piloted the Eagle lunar module. Born in Montclair, New Jersey, in 1930, Aldrin graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1951 and received his Doctor of Science from M.I.T. in 1963. As both a scholar and as a test pilot for the Air Force, he was especially qualified to become an astronaut in the NASA space program. On the Gemini XII flight in 1966, he established a new record for extravehicular activity, spending 5-1/2 hours outside the spacecraft. He also performed the first space rendezvous using on-board computations, and he made the first fully automatic reentry of a spacecraft. On the historic flight of Apollo XI, it was his great responsibility to place the Eagle lunar module safely and precisely on the moon's surface. Having completed man's first ascent on the moon, Aldrin and Armstrong maneuvered their lunar module to a rendezvous with command module pilot Michael Collins who had remained in lunar orbit in the Columbia. Aldrin's perfect performance in the difficult landing and docking feats helped assure the success of Apollo XI and is recorded forever in the annals of aerospace history. Image Size: 17.75 x 21 in. Overall Size: 22.25 x 25.25 in. Unframed. (B95376)

Lot 333

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Captain James A. Lovell, Jr., USN" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood James A. Lovell Commemorative Cover postmarked September 22, 1990. Born March 25, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio, James A. Lovell, Jr. probably never imagined he would become a hero in American aerospace history. Lovell served on missions for the Gemini and Apollo programs. The Gemini 7 mission, with Frank Borman, set a record of fourteen days in earth orbit and made the first space rendezvous with Gemini 6. With Edwin Aldrin, he flew Gemini 12, the final mission of the Gemini program. On December 21, 1968, Lovell, Borman and William Anders became the first men to leave earth's gravity and orbit the moon in the Apollo 8 spacecraft, returning to earth the first close-up views of the lunar surface and of the moon's back side. Further, Apollo 8 demonstrated the technology which would later permit crews to actually land on the moon. In 1970, Lovell headed to the moon with Fred Haise, Jr. and John Swigert, Jr. in Apollo 13. Due to an on-board emergency, the mission had to be aborted en route to the moon, but the herioc and innovative efforts of Lovell and the crew combined with the help of ground control to bring the three astronauts safely back to Earth. Captain James A. Lovell retired from the Navy and NASA in 1973 to embark on a distinguished career in the business world. Image Size: 18.25 x 21.25 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 26.75 in. Unframed. Dan Fern (British, B. 1945) "Toy Building Blocks" Original First Day Cover mixed media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Great Britain 27p Toys and Games stamp issued May 16, 1989. A simple child-sized block of wood. Sometimes square, sometimes rectangular. Other times shaped like an arch or pillar. Or decorated with the letters of the alphabet. No one knows when toy building blocks were first enjoyed by children. But we definitely know when they became popular with adults. In the 19th century, revolutionary educational methods such as those of Montessori and Froebel, with their precepts of learning by doing, taught that an interested child is a happy child. Formal, planned educational methods -- especially kindergarten methods -- began influencing the pattern of toys. These methods popularized building blocks and their more modern development, the constructor set, because they helped build motor skills and depth perception, while allowing children to imaginatively interact with their environment. Soon, the humble toy building block grew more complex. As adults became involved, children found themselves playing with magnificently ornamented building blocks of wood and stone from Germany, and cabin logs from the United States. On both sides of the Atlantic, clever construction games were patented. Later, so were structural metal engineering sets. The toy building block might or might not have gotten better, but it had certainly become more elaborate. Image Size: 16.75 x 20.75 in. Overall Size: 20.75 x 22.75 in. Unframed. (B12018)

Wan Weisheng (Chinese, B. 1932) "Great Wall of China" Signed lower left. Original Tempera on Watercolor Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. To dig through so much earth, to lay brick and stone, and actually build a wall 1,500 miles long, is certainly one of man's most impressive accomplishments. Seventy-nine million cubic yards of stone and 236 million cubic yards of rammed earth provided the raw materials for the great Wall of China. One million men provided the hand-labor. But, the price was high. And, the Chinese proverb, a life for every stone, proved prophetic, as over half the men died in a building process that took hundreds of years to complete. Initial construction began during the feudal wars of 475 B.C. Following this period, culture, art and learning flourished, and in hopes of uniting the country and protecting it from outside rulers, the Emperor Shi Huan Di ordered the most massive construction project ever undertaken by man. All old sections of the defensive walls were repaired and linked together to create the Great Wall. Almost one thousand years later, the Ming dynasty reinforced the original earth and rock walls with slabs of stone and huge bricks, leaving the Great Wall much as it appears today. Now, the Great Wall covers nearly one tenth of the world's circumference and contains more than thirty thousand towers. It stands twenty-five feet high and tapers from twenty-five feet at the base to fifteen feet at the top. It remains an inpiring reminder of the art, genius and tenacity of the Chinese people. Image Size: 7.25 x 8.75 in. Overall Size: 12 x 13 in. Unframed. (B05543)

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "The Shootout" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared in the Fleetwood Trails West Collection of Fine Art Prints as "The Shootout" published in 1983. "Three Men Hurled into Eternity in the Duration of a Moment," read the headlines. The Tombstone Epitaph blazed the story of the famous shootout which took place at the livery stable known as thh O.K. Corral. Tombstone, Arizona, the town "too tough to die," had chosen Virgil Earp city marshal along with his brothers Morgan and Wyatt and their hard-drinking cohort Doc Holliday. Rancher Ike Clanton, his clan and friends, had been labeled as rustlers, "fractious and ... much-dreaded cow-boys" as the Epitaph had called them. Earp had been warned that Clanton was "thirsting for blood" and had made threats to "shoot him on sight." When the two factions met, Virgil Earp commanded that the Clantons give up their guns. At that moment, two shots were fired simultaneously and only sixty seconds later the shootout was over with three of the Clanton group dead. The law of the frontier was quick and self-proclaimed, and lawmen were often quick to kill. They had to be, because, as everyone knew "there's no law west of Kansas City, and west of Fort Scott, no God." With outlawry running rampant in the mining camps, railroad camps, and on the cattle trails, despairing businessmen hired tough gunfighters for protection of the citizenry. Indeed, it was the reputations of lawmen -- such as the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday -- that helped to finally tame the Wild West. Size: 21 x 18 in. Unframed. (B07577)

Tom Lydon (American, B. 1944) "Statue of Freedom" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Official Mail stamp issued January 22, 1991. High atop the dome of the Capitol she stands, robes flowing, looking staunchly to the east. Her head is crowned with a helmet of feathers, stars and an eagle's head. Her left hand holds a wreath and shield and her right rests gently upon a sheathed sword. She is Freedom, a seven and a half ton statue completed in 1858 by Thomas Crawford, cast and hoisted atop the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., in 1860. Crawford, a leading American sculptor of the time, was well known for several of his works, but his status was firmly entrenched with the completion of Freedom. A Neoclassical sculptor, Crawford studied first in New York City in 1835 as a stone-cutter. His talent blossomed and took him to Rome, Italy, where he was tutored by the Dutch sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. The Eternal City became Crawford's home and he remained there for most of his life. In the United States Capitol Building, Crawford created many works of art, including the doors to the House and the Senate, statutes of Justice and History, and the impressive sculpture of the Progress of Civilization. But it is Freedom herself that is most awe-inspiring, for she encapsulates the very essence of America. This attractive artwork is based upon Thomas Crawford's monumental creation. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 14.75 in. Unframed. (B12887)
