A diamond mounted cluster crossover ring: with two circular clusters, each with a central old European brilliant-cut stone approximately 0.5ct, claw-set within a surround of smaller old brilliant-cut diamonds on a diamond-mounted crossover band, the diamonds estimated to weigh 3.5cts in total, ring size N 1/2.
A Chinese bamboo opium pipe: with ivory end and mouthpiece, the white metal, copper and brass mount set with one faceted and four cabochon stone and glass beads, the hexagonal ceramic bowl carved to the underside with symbols, 63 cm long; together with a glass and metal opium lamp, 9 cm high [2]. *Provenance: Mr and Mrs McAlpine Woods and thence by family descent. Roland and Gertrude McAlpine Woods travelled extensively in the Far East in the 1920s and 1930s. On many of their journeys they visited places few Europeans had been to and on one occasion they were the first 'travellers' from the West to visit Yunnan province in China. People travelling for the sake of travelling were largely unknown at that point and in that place. Mr and Mrs McAlpine Woods retired to East Devon.
A Chinese carved inkstone: of arched rectangular form, the underside carved with an inscription which, according to a translation on notepaper from The Gloucester Hotel, Hong Kong dated 1/1/37 and signed W.Schofield, reads 'Kiang Chien Chi, whose post-....... name was Te T'ung, & his second name T'ung Shu, a man of the capital city of Kiang [probably Nanking], was the eldest son of [Kiang] Tai Shau. He rose to the [literary] degree of ..... & held office as Imperial Censor. By heredity versed in ancient script, bronzes, stone & bamboo objects, during his leisure he would diligently collect, criticise & study them. Accordingly in the 57th year of K'ien Lung, in the frosty month [November 1793] this beautiful stone proclaims & transmits his marvellous skill for a thousand centuries' 9 x 3.5 cm, with hardwood stand and cover. * Provenance: Mr and Mrs McAlpine Woods. - See lot 516
A Chinese jade archer's ring and two discs: the archer's ring carved with a four-character inscription and two deer, one holding lingzhi, the stone of mottled cream colour, 3 cm diameter [flaws to one rim]; together with a disc in the form of a Chinese coin carved with astronomical and archaic symbols, the stone of grey flecked celadon colour, 5.5 cm diameter; and a small disc of russet colour carved with two chilong, 3 cm diameter [3]. * Provenance: Mr and Mrs McAlpine Woods. - See lot 516
A rare Indian mother of pearl and stone casket: of rectangular form, the brass frame applied with polished red stone and mother of pearl plaques of fish-scale and foliate design secured with metal pins, with iron hinges and clasp, on shaped bracket feet, Gujarat, 17th century, 20 cm wide [some old damage and losses].
Stone, Thame, a hook and spike alarum wall clock: the thirty-hour bird-cage timepiece movement sounding the alarm on a bell, the ten-inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and half-hour markings, the dial centre having a silvered alarm setting disc and engraved with floral decoration along with the maker's name Stone, Thame, with cast-brass floral spandrels to the four corners and a blued steel single hour hand, diameter 25.5cm. * Biography There are various clockmakers with the name Stone recorded working in Thame, Oxfordshire including John in circa 1764, Richard in 1761 until 1782, and Thomas in the late 18th century who has a watch exhibited in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
