A MASSIVE CARVED 'MELON' DUAN INKSTONE, EARLY QINGChina, 18th century. The stone with its numerous greenish-yellow 'eyes' is carved as leafy vines bearing lobed melons as well as plums, the lapidary cleverly utilizing the shadings of the mineral to accentuate the fruit. The well is carved as a melon with the stalk clearly visible and continuing as a vine along the inkstone.Provenance: Wing Kei Curios & Porcelain, Hong Kong, 1 March 1996. A TURQUOISE MINIATURE PENDANT OF A HAREChina, presumably Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Very fine miniature depiction of a crouching hare, the fourth animal in Chinese zodiac, known to be the luckiest out of all the twelve. In ancient Chinese culture it was believed that the rabbit lives on the moon and it is a great companion of the Moon Goddess who never grows up. A LARGE BLUE AND WHITE 'PRUNUS AND LINGBI' LOBED DISH, KANGXI MARK AND PERIODChina, 1662-1722. The shallow sides rising from a short tapering foot to a wide everted lobed rim, the base with a six-character mark da Qing Kangxi nianzhi within a double circle.Provenance: Holzapfel collection, Geneva, Switzerland. The greater part of the Holzapfel Oriental Ceramics collection was formed in England and Ireland in the late 1950s and 1960s. After the death of Mr. Holzapfel, most of his pieces went to his children, ten in all. Two of Mr. Holzapfel's eldest sons then started their own collections in the early 1970s, both by adding significantly to their shares of the inheritance. Collecting was eventually continued by one of Mr. Holzapfel's grandsons, who lives in Switzerland and is a member of the Oriental Ceramic Society. A MOONSHINE STONE 'EGG' GLOWING IN THE DARKSouth Asia, presumably 2000 years old. An amazing stone with extraordinary properties considered to be magical, carved in the shape of an egg, brilliantly polished and nice to the touch. Nuan Chan Stone (Moonshine Stone), also called 'Sea Ghost' or 'Night Pearl', is neon green in color, consists of some natural fluorochromes, and probably originated in underwater volcanoes. They can easily absorb light (both sunlight and artificial) and glow green in the dark for a long time. Therefore, they were used as important Buddhist amulets and meditation stones. SIX NEAR EAST STONE SEALSThis lot comprises of six schist and stone stamp seals from ancient Near East (4000 BC-2000 BC or later) with geometrical and faunal engraved impressions. Three of them with figural knob to the top, all pieces with a hole to suspend them on a necklace or around the wrist so that they were always available when needed.
