Wan Weisheng (B. 1932) "Great Wall in Spring" Signed lower left. Tempra on Watercolor Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the China 8? Great Wall in Springtime stamp issued June 25, 1979. To dig through so much earth, to lay brick and stone, and actually build a wall 1,500 miles long, is certainly one of man's most impressive accomplishments. Seventy-nine million cubic yards of stone and 236 million cubic yards of rammed earth provided the raw materials for the great Wall of China. One million men provided the hand-labor. But, the price was high. And, the Chinese proverb, a life for every stone, proved prophetic, as over half the men died in a building process that took hundreds of years to complete. Initial construction began during the feudal wars of 475 B.C. Following this period, culture, art and learning flourished, and in hopes of uniting the country and protecting it from outside rulers, the Emperor Shi Huan Di ordered the most massive construction project ever undertaken by man. All old sections of the defensive walls were repaired and linked together to create the Great Wall. Almost one thousand years later, the Ming dynasty reinforced the original earth and rock walls with slabs of stone and huge bricks, leaving the Great Wall much as it appears today. Now, the Great Wall covers nearly one tenth of the world's circumference and contains more than thirty thousand towers. It stands twenty-five feet high and tapers from twenty-five feet at the base to fifteen feet at the top. It remains an inpiring reminder of the art, genius and tenacity of the Chinese people. Image Size: 7.25 x 8.75 in. Overall Size: 12 x 13 in. Unframed. (B05539)
Zhan Jianjun (Chinese, B. 1931) "A Lake in the Stone Forest" Oil on Canvas painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is an original unsigned oil on canvas by Zhan Jianjun that was commissioned directly by Unicover. Helmuth Stone Gallery and Wind River Studios both guarantee the authenticity of this piece. This painting commissioned by James A. Helzer, originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the China 8fen Lake in the Stone Forest stamp issue of September 18, 1981.Only 120 kilometers southeast of the city of Kunming in China's remote Yunnan Province, the Stone Forest is surrounded by one of the most enchanting landscapes in all of China. Here in Yunnan, where the winter is never bitterly cold, nor the summer unbearably hot, a patchwork of sub-tropical valleys and basins spreads across the high plateau. Home to the rare golden monkey and the delicately beautiful camellia tree, Yunnan is a paradise of magnificent flora and fauna. Botanical gardens, zoos, primeval forests, and rare birds and animals cover the province like an ornate painted screen. Bordered on the south by the treacherous Indo-China border and on the west by the mighty mountains of Burma, this intoxicating, picturesque province is almost entirely mountainous. For centuries, far-away Yunnan served as a penal colony where enemies of political despots and war lords were easily banished. Distant and inaccessible, Yunnan's capital city of Kunming was the unofficial capital of Free China during wartime. Here Marco Polo was awed by the 2000 year-old "City of Spring," abundant with flowers and sprinkled with scores of ornate temples and lavishly decorated pagodas. The medley of sights and sounds in Kunming, along with the enchanting landscape of Yunnan Province, are a fitting prelude to the strange and breathtaking sights of the Stone Forest. This beauty and wonder are reflected in a serene, limpid pool in the Stone Forest, portrayed in this artwork.Image Size: 27.5 x 23.5 in. Overall Size: 28.25 x 24 in. (B07310)

Zhan Jianjun (Chinese, B. 1931) "Morning Clouds Above the Stone Forest" Oil on Canvas. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the China 10fen Morning in the Stone Forest stamp issue of September 18, 1981.The sculptured summits of the Stone Forest, flushed with the rosy light of dawn, echo the simple philosophy with which the Chinese come to terms with life: to take life as it comes. Here in the sanctuary of the Stone Forest, the benediction of a quiet sunrise encourages this tranquil view of life. Surrounded by the green woods and lush mountain plateaus of Yunnan Province, the Stone Forest area reveals many colorful facets of Chinese life. The mainstay of the economy is agriculture, practiced by farmers in community farms. Those hardy men and women are experts in bringing forth crops from the soil, through their intimate closeness with nature and centuries of experience planting rice in terraced fields. Richly blessed rivers and lakes fill the fishermen's hold with the daily catch; thus fishing ranks as an important activity in Yunnan. One of the richest provinces in China, its natural resources are boundless. And yet, industry, too, has taken a prime role in its economic life. China treasures its youth, and children are seen in schools and playgrounds everywhere in Yunnan. The people have a predilection for dance and song; their diverse folk costumes are brightly adorned with ornaments and decorations of brass and shells. The infinite patience of the Chinese and their fine aesthetic sense is everywhere evident in the Yunnan Province, just as the morning glow of the Stone Forest, depicted in this artwork, reflects the timeless beauty of China's most unusual natural wonder.Sight Size: 27.5 x 23.5 in.
