[Welsh interest] A silver mounted ivory and walnut presentation mallet, the tapered ivory handle with a lobed, beaded and foliate carved terminal, the moulded and rounded walnut head inset with a silver roundel by Hammond, Creake & Co. (St. Arnaud Creake), Sheffield 1911, engraved Whitchurch Wesleyan Methodist Church. Presented to Mrs Herbert Cory Septr. 9th 1911 , 21cm high (8 1/4in) high The Cory Baronetcy, of Coryton in Whitchurch in the County of Glamorgan, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom in 1919 for the businessman and Conservative politician Herbert Cory. He was a Director of John Cory & Sons, shipowners, and sat as Member of Parliament for Cardiff and Cardiff South. He was a noted philanthropist. In 1911 a further major expansion took place to the Methodist church in Whitchurch. The foundation stone was laid in September 1911 by Mrs. Herbert Cory and Mr. Hubert Spence Thomas. The total cost of this scheme was £675.
