Exley was a leading light in the collecting of English ceramics from the early twentieth century to the post war period. During much of that time, attributions to many English factories were still in their infancy. He was a member of the English Ceramic Circle and wrote The Pinxton China Factory, 1963 and the History of Torksey and Mansfield China Factory, 1970. Exley left a large collection of English glass to the Usher Gallery, Lincoln.
