Group of six FOB SEALS, late 18th century / early 19th century. These historically interesting seals have been mostly identified, by means of inscriptions on an old piece of paper, and additionally with two attached very old tags. They measure between 30mm & 39mm high, and each have intaglio carved family crests in hardstones, 3 x Carnelian, 2 x white Onyx or similar & 1 x light green stone. Two are, at least in part, gold coloured metal, and test as gold, and apart from the hardstone, there may well be loading and base metal reinforcements, the other 4 are Pinchbeck or similar gold plated metal. The paper reads SEALS OF … Hugh Hayward of Chester, Edward Hayward of Goldstone, John Vardon (my grandfather) & Mr Vardon (my uncle), the attached labels read .. Edward Hayward Goldstone, his seal 2 Aug 1827 & John Vardon his seal 22 Feb 1809. Goldstone, referred to in this description, is a small village / hamlet near Market Drayton, Shropshire. The family home was Goldstone Hall. (6)
