CALLAGHAN JAMES: (1912-2005) British Prime Minister 1976-79 & Labour Politician. Collection of eight T.Ls.S. Jim Callaghan, some with holograph salutations and subscriptions, each one page. 8vo & 4to, London, 8th May 1968 - 17th February 1983, most on printed stationary of the House of Commons, to Frank Harcourt-Munning. Callaghan writes a series of social and political letters, in part, 'I am glad you support the proposals in the White Paper on “Children in Trouble†and I am looking forward to making a start on their implementation. I was interested to hear about David Powell and shall see that his name is brought forward when appointments to the Race Relations Board and the Community Relations Commission are being considered' (8th May 1968), 'Many thanks for telling me what you heard of my visit to Northern Ireland, and also passing on the messages from your niece' (12th May 1970), 'It was very kind of you to let me know about the letter our Embassy in Beirut wrote to the parents of Michael Clough. I agree that Mr. Stirling's letter was indeed an admirable one…' (5th December 1974), 'Many thanks for your letter of 17th March, inviting me to present the Victor Gollancz 1974 Annual World Humanity to Archbishop Helder Camara…' (19th March 1975), one letter is addressed to Glen Barnham, 'I am very glad to hear that Frank Harcourt-Munning will lay the first stone of the construction of the Ealing Handicapped Adventure Playground Association project… I very well understand, in view of Frank's reputation in so many fields, why you have asked him to undertake this ceremony….He has gained, and merited, a world-wide reputation for his assistance to the developing nations in all parts of the globe…' (7th November 1979), 'I am very grateful to Mr Mukherjee for gathering together such a distinguished advisory committee, and of course to you for being the inspiration of it all' (17th February 1983), together with a T.L.S by his wife Audrey Callaghan, in part, 'Thank you for your note letting us know about the death of Harold Laski's widow… I well recall Harold Laski spending a night with us in North Wales more than 30 years ago…' (15th August 1977), and two further T.Ls.S. by Private Secretaries. [CHRISTIAN OF SCHLESWIG HOLSTEIN]: (1831-1917) German Prince, husband of Princess Helena, daughter of Queen Victoria. A polished part-gilded bronze ceremonial trowel, the handle surmounted with the Prince's coronet and inset silver entwined monogram. Engraved with the civic arms of Walsall to one side and engraved to the other 'presented to His Royal Highness Prince Christian of Schleswig Holstein on his laying the foundation stone of the new town hall for the County Borough of Walsall...', 29th May 1902. ELIZABETH II: (1926- ) Queen of the United Kingdom 1952- . Autograph Memorandum Signed, with her initials, ER, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p. (Sandringham, Norfolk), 12th February 1978, to [Robert C.] Marrington. The Queen writes to her Tappiser stating, in part, 'Here is the wording for the stone to be put in the kennel wall, with a rough idea of the layout. I should like Sherry's name to be in bigger letters….' Accompanied by the Queen's original pencil and ink drawing of the headstone, one page, 8vo, indicating that the black Labrador, named Sherry of Biteabout, was born on 9th April 1964 and died on 1st February 1978, and was 'For 9 years the faithful companion of The Queen'.
