A gentleman's single stone diamond ring, the old mine cut stone flying claw set above lobed indentations in a plain tapered shank stamped '18', size Q; estimated size of diamond 1.41cts, estimated colour J/K, estimated clarity P3 Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood CBE The cut of the diamond is of eccentric geometry, with an off-centre table, asymmetric culet facet, and numerous extra facets. The girdle varies considerably in thickness and is bruted, with naturals and associated nibbles; there is an eye-visible chip affecting four crown facets; many of the facets have clear polishing lines, some severe.

A contemporary sapphire single stone ring, the octagonal cut royal blue sapphire held by four white-tipped claws to a modern designer mount and shank of yellow precious metal stamped '750', size D; estimated weight of sapphire 4.85cts The ring is in excellent condition, barely worn; the sapphire is fresh, with sharp facet edges, good polish and no obvious wear. The sapphire is a very pretty medium cornflower blue and eye-visibly clean; with magnification, there is a straight double band of silk deep within the stone, and three small well-defined disc-like veils all towards the girdle.

Both very dirty and with various bumps. Old stretcher bar marks can be seen from the front. Craquelure overall. Darkened and degraded coating/varnish on the surface of the paint layer making the composition difficult to read. . Dirt and white drips across the surface. Frames have been repainted with brown paint and have several areas of loss to decorative composite and gilding. The spaniel has a hole by his paws, approx 2in by 2in in size., L-shaped
