PAOLO VIOLA "Socrates in his agony" or possibly Homer, a sculpted terracotta bust of a bearded man with hollow eyes and mouth, his face grimacing, inscribed verso "Gen 205 1742 Scultato 27 detto - Paolo Viola Fecit", later mounted on a turned breccia marble socle, 26 cm high overall CONDITION REPORTS Bust is separate to the base - don't think this is original although there has been some damage to the interior of the bust as a consequence. There is a large chip to the lower edge of the chest. The crown has been off the head and repaired. Several cracks running through it as well. The face has been repaired in several places including the eyes. It is dirty and in need of a good clean, there is a small hole to the left hand shoulder which is a result of the stand becoming detached from the head itself some time ago. The back of the neck has also been restored suggesting the top half of the head has become detached from the bearded lower section of the head and neck. There is a chunk of hair missing as well as various chips, knocks, etc all over. The metal support is not contemporary to the socle, has been put in and filled at the base. The base visually appears to be sound though upon close inspection, some of the cracks along the marble appear to be from damage. One particularly large crack across the centre, visible from the base, but not so visible from the side due to the variegation of the marble. Various flaws to the stone all over - general wear and tear conducive with age and use - see images for further details. Height is 17 cm not including base
