A WHITE JADE 'LU RU FENG MU' GROUP, MING DYNASTY, H: 5.6 cm. The even-toned white stone is delicately carved to depict a smiling boy from a Chinese Confucianist story. The boy's bald head is framed by two hair buns and he is wearing a long robe. He is trying to milk a deer, holding a small bucket for the milk in his right hand.
A SMALL WHITE JADE HORSE, 18TH CENTURY. 3.5 cm wide. The horse is carved in a recumbent position with its head turned back, with a long, finely incised, split mane. The stone is smoothly polished and is of an even white tone. Literature: A similar example in an exhibition held at the Asian Art Museum--Chong-Moon Lee Center for Asian Art and Culture, Nov. 10, 2007-Aug. 2008, is illustrated in Later Chinese Jades : Ming dynasty to early twentieth century from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Michael Knight, He Li, and Terese Tse Bartholomew (2007)- page 74, cat. no. 47.
A JADE LION AND CUB GROUP, 18TH CENTURY. H: 4.5 cm, W: 7.5 cm. A coiled Buddhist lion is skilfully carved, turning its head to the left, its large eyes framed by elegantly curling brows, with a large brocade ball under its grinning mouth. A playful cub is lying on the lion's back resting its head clutching at the ribbon. The depiction of a parent and cub, amusingly playing with a brocade ball, implies the thought of family strength and longevity (particularly associated with the long ribbons tied to the ball). In addition, the smaller and larger lion, dashi xiaoshi, as a homophone for taishi shaoshi, the titles of high official ranking, can be viewed as the wish 'May you and your descendants achieve high rank'. The stone of pale green tone with areas of light and dark russet inclusions. Literature: A related white jade group of Buddhist lion and cub, 18th century, but larger, is illustrated in Virtuous Treasures: Chinese Jades for the Scholar's Table, Hong Kong, 2008, pl. 104. Another related carving of a Buddhist lion, used to exhibit in Musée Cernuschi, Jades et Pierres Dures de la Chine, March 1927; and Musée Cernuschi, Les Fleurs et Oiseaux dans l'Art Chinois, April 1929, was in the sale of Bonhams, 15 May 2014, lot 169. Provenance: From the collection of Lady Horlick (dec'd). The family manufactured the popular drink 'Horlicks' from 1873.
