A Flemish woven tapestry depicting a hunting scene with falconry, first half 17th century, of rectangular form, with figures in courtly dress on horses, falcons perched on their outstretched arms, before a wooded landscape with architectural features in Netherlandish Golden Age style, a stream, and further groups of figures, the foreground with hounds chasing wading birds, 233 cm high, 277 cm wide including associated wood suspending bar PROVENANCE: Ludstone Hall, Shropshire CATALOGUE NOTES: Tapestries were often commissioned to add decoration and warmth to the draughty stone rooms of countryside stately homes and castles. As hunting was a favoured pastime in these settings, it became a popular subject. The topic of falconry specifically is also featured in the renowned 15th century Netherlandish ‘Devonshire Hunts’ group of tapestries held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The subject’s presence in this later example demonstrates its longevity in tapestry manufacture
