Cunn (Samuel) A New Treatise of the Construction and Use of the Sector, Containing, the Solutions of the Principal Problems by that Admirable Instrument in the Chief Branches of Mathematicks..., now Carefully Revised by Edmund Stone, engraved folding frontispiece, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces and diagrams, folding engraved plate at rear, 3pp. advertisements, occasional light browning, contemporary calf, gilt, rebacked, blindstamped arms to covers, preserved in custom drop-back box, [Tomash & Williams C210], 8vo, for John Wilcox and Thomas Heath, 1729.⁂ A treatise on the sector, apparently concocted from lectures given by Cunn, a teacher of mathematics in London, author of some introductory works and interpreter of the mathematics of Newton, Leybourn, and Keill. Its publication was funded by the instrument maker Thomas Heath; a large folding plate depicts a 12-inch brass sector divided by Cunn and Heath. The editor, Edmund Stone, FRS (1700-1768), had written a popular work on the sector (first published in 1721).
