An incredible collection of 3x WWI First World War diaries belonging to a Francis Norman Willis of the Royal West Kent (and or) Devonshire Regiment, whilst being held as a Prisoner Of War ( POW ) in Afionkarahissar, Turkey. The first diary being a miniature marbelled lined diary features very detailed accounts of Willis' day to day life from Jan 1st 1917 to 14th December 1917 - largely based around his work (mostly stone carrying), but also details some of his friends, and he quite frequently references that he is in a 'very good' camp - there are lots of rest days, bath days and walks. Willis also speaks of illness, and is frequently ill himself. The back of the diary features various notes on food, friend's addresses and other such notes. The second diary, a much larger ' Composition Francaise ' notebook features a 'summarised' version of the smaller diary, possibly written up shortly after the war, although in the same pen. Towards the rear of the book are various hand-written ' Communiques To British & Indian Troops ', copied from telegrams received. These often detail the efforts by the allies in trying to win the war in Turkey, and rescue the troops. Makes for some fascinating reading. The third diary a middle-sized leather bound one, appears to be the earliest (with dates showing as 1915) and features largely ' Communiques ' copied in longhand, from telegrams received. In this diary, Willis lists his prisoner number as ' 1785 ' and lists his next of kin in Devon and Taunton. Many of the telegrams outline the horrors involved, including one which states they are 'killing a large number of horses so as to reduce the quantity of grain eaten every day, and I have had to reduce your rations - it is necessary to do this in order to keep the flag flying '.Along with a photograph, presumed to be that of Willis in uniform. A rare and fascinating personal insight into the life of a British prisoner of war in Turkey.
