Rome, ca. 100 BCE to 300 CE. This is a bronze decorative terret, a metal loop on a horse harness that is used to guide the reins and prevent them from snagging. The shape of this one is a head of Medusa on a leaf-shaped background, with the loop above the top of her head. Medusa, a mythological figure drawn from Classical Greece into the Roman Pantheon, was described by Ovid; the Roman twist on the story was that she was a once-beautiful woman whose hair was turned to snakes and her countenance made so terrible that to look at her would turn one to stone. Lot 338

Russia, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A wonderful Russian icon painted with egg tempera on wood, depicting Russian princes Boris and Gleb, the first saints bestowed with the honor of canonization in Kievan Rus following the Christianization of the country. Boris and Gleb were the younger children of Vladimir the Great, the grand prince of Kiev who is renowned for converting the land to Christianity in the year 988. Both brothers were murdered during the internecine wars (1015-1019). According to lore, their remnants performed miracles. Hence, both were canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in Rus in 1071. A similar composition depicting Boris and Gleb dressed in regal vestments riding together on horseback dating to the 1st half of the 14th century, clearly the inspiration for this example, is in the collection of The State Tretyakov Gallery. The Tretyakov Gallery's description of this beautiful icon reads as follows, "Princes Boris and Gleb were the younger sons of Grand Prince Vladimir of Kiev. Soon after the death of their father in 1015, they were cruelly murdered by their elder brother Svyatopolk, who was eliminating rivals in his fight to take over the throne of Kiev. In the «Life and death of… Boris and Gleb» by the chronicler Nestor (1070–80s) there is a story about how prisoners in a jail called upon these princes for help and they appeared on horseback. This monument is the earliest of the surviving icons of this type of iconography. The icon of «Boris and Gleb on horseback» is one of the first discovered at the beginning of the century. It immediately became widely known. The icon was the subject of a lengthy academic polemic. For a long time it was considered to come from Moscow, and since it was associated with the Church of the Assumption in the Moscow Kremlin there was a logic to this provenance. But the stylistic peculiarities of the icon forced scholars to appreciate its roots in Pskov painting of the early period and this opinion has predominated among specialists in art history in recent years. A confirmation of this view may also be found in chronicle sources, which speak of the participation of Pskov masters (stone masons and icon painters) in building and decorating the churches of the Moscow Kremlin." (www.tretyakovgallery.ru/en/collection/_show/image/_id/2636)A wonderful example inspired by one of the most beloved depictions of these cherished saint brothers on horseback. Evidence of former back slats dates this piece before the 1880s. Size: 14.125" L x 10" W (35.9 cm x 25.4 cm) Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: Intact with minor wear to peripheries. Painting shows some crazing and minor losses. Missing back slats with chips on back side. Overall a very good example. Lot 40b

Luristan, ca. 1000 to 650 BCE. This is a flanged cast bronze dagger that at one time would have had a handle made of wood, stone, or bone. The mountain tribesmen of Luristan served as mercenaries for both of these powers and many of them were buried alongside daggers like these. Size: 14.8" L x 1.3" W (37.6 cm x 3.3 cm). Provenance: Ex-Private PJ. Piscopo Collection, Ex M. Pedersen acquired before 1990. Condition: Patina; some wear to edges of blade. Lot 44

Byzantium, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. This is a fun collection of four varied items from Byzantine Christian worship -- there is a small pendant with a walking saint, a transparent red stone carved saint's bust, a large pin with a cross and Christ's head as top decoration, and a cross and small icon connected by a bronze chain. These objects were made at a time when tremendous effort and innovation went into producing art with Christian themes. Size of largest: 13.2" L x 1.2" W (33.5 cm x 3 cm). Provenance: Ex-Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: All have patina/wear (except for the small stone one). One is a fragment. Lot 94b

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1875 CE. A hand carved and finely painted wooden statue of Jesus dressed in a white flowing robe, with a finely rendered face, coiffure, and hands. Just look at the Christ figure's visage, with its remarkably naturalistic features, inlaid eyes, and wavy tresses and beard. Then take a moment to appreciate the meticulously delineated hands complete with veins, knuckles, nail beds, and stigmata through the palms. It is important to recognize that carving is a subtractive sculpting technique that unlike modeling (an additive process in which a form is built up with clay or wax) is not terribly forgiving. When the sculptor is cutting away from wood or stone, corrections are less possible. This makes the fine rendering of this example all the more impressive. An exquisite Cristo! Size: figure itself measures 6.75" at widest x 16" H (17.1 cm x 40.6 cm); 17.25" H (43.8 cm) on stand. Provenance: Ex-Historia Antiques, James Caswell, Santa Monica, CA Condition: Repairs to head and arms. Feet and some fingers missing. Expected surface wear with some paint loss as shown. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111785
