A Victorian silver gilt 'Solar' Monstrance or Ostensorium, by John Hardman & Co, Birmingham 1899, the glazed receiver with a pearl-set green and blue enamelled frame incorporating the Latin 'Sanctus' repeated seven times, within an elaborate sunray frame applied with eight Seraphim with diamonds at the cross of their raised top wings, below a cross finial set with old brilliant cut diamonds within an applied rope twist border, all mounted on a tapering stem engraved with quatrefoil motifs either side of a large fruiting vine knop over a spreading hexafoil base decorated with a cabochon turquoise mounted cross opposite a half pearl rosette with turquoise surround, height 68.5cm, all contained in a fitted wooden case, together with an electroplated custodian receiver containing the lunette also on a hexafoil base, 96oz (gross weight) Provenance: Formerly the property of The Benedictine Community of St. Mary at the Cross, Edgware, Greater London.
