A collection of Chinese and Japanese items, including a 20th century Japanese suzuribako or writing box, the lid decorated in gilt with a bird diving towards a river, 15 by 21cm, a floral carved soapstone brush wipe, 20 by 9cm high, a second brush wipe pot carved as the head of a gentleman, of unusual milky white stone, 11 by 8.5cm high, and three modern Chinese cloisonne items comprising a brush pot and two vases with covers. A Japanese bronze study of a cockerel and hen, Meiji Period, naturalistically cast in standing positions, with inset red stone eyes and metal pupils, the cockerel modelled with head turned to the left, 12 by 28 by 26.5cm high, it's mate cast with her head turned to the right, 10 by 7.5 by 15.5cm high, a/f hen's legs reattached(?), apparently unsigned, with original purchase receipt dated September 15, 1936, from S. Hayashi, Japanese & Chinese Works of Art, Kyoto, Japan, for 85 Yen. (2)Provenance: The Estate of Mr Joseph B. Hay, son of Major-General Arthur K. Hay DSO OBE - 100 years of a military family.
A fine Japanese suzuribako, 19th century, the black and gold maki-e ground inlaid with mother of pearl sakura blossoms on takemaki-e and kirikane leafy branch to the lid, the interior with nashiji ground, interior of cover and brush holder with further hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and kirikane decoration, depicting foliage and a pool of water held within a tree stump, mother of pearl detailing, rectangular ink stone above bronze shell form water dropper, fundame gilded rims, apparently unsigned, 22 by 24 by 4cm. Provenance: The Estate of Mr Joseph B. Hay, son of Major-General Arthur K. Hay DSO OBE - 100 years of a military family.
