MICHAEL GOSSCHALK: TURQUOISE AND DIAMOND-SET FLOWER BROOCH, 1960The textured flower, with stamen set with oval turquoise cabochons surrounding a brilliant-cut diamond, the stem accented with a brilliant-cut diamond, mounted in 18 carat gold, maker's mark MG, London hallmark, length 7.0cmFootnotes:In 1957, Michael Gosschalk, once a successful stone merchant, established his first jewellery shop at 20 Motcomb Street in London. Princess Margaret became a client and Gosschalk was one of only seven independent jewellers whose designs featured in her collection. Gosschalk's wife, the society milliner, Jenny Fischer, operated a few doors down at 16 Motcomb Street and made a number of hats for some of Princess Margaret's wedding guests in 1960.The Gosschalk family lived above Jenny's shop at number 16. Michael Gosschalk catered to a younger set of clients than their more conservative counterparts who purchased on Bond Street. As Elizabeth Benn noted in a 1961 article for the Daily Telegraph, A Change from Bond Street Glitter, 'Kutchinsky and Michael Gosschalk probably make the nearest thing we have to modern jewellery in this country.' A Japanese Bronze Figure of a Second World War Soldier, standing holding a rifle to his right side, his left foot resting on a stone, on a stone built mound set with a panel incised with Japanese characters, the reverse with a further inscribed panel and with a signature tablet, 39.5cmBayonet missing from the rifle, crack to his right wrist. There is some seperation of the rifle butt from the rocky base. There is a small air hole behind his right knee and the dagger hanging from his back left waist belt is missing the lower section.

A CHINESE MOTTLED CELADON JADE KNEELING HORSE wearing an elaborate saddle, with a finely-carved mane and a well-defined rein, the stone with russet highlights and a soft lustrous polish, early Qing or later, 15.5cm wide x 7cm high, on a finely-carved hardwood standProvenance: An American private collection formed after the Second World War.Acquired by the grandfather of the present owner from the above and thence by descent.Literature: Jessica Rawson: "Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing", the British Museum Press, published 1995, illustrates a comparable horse on page 373, 26:16. The author describes the jade as Yuan or later and compares it to a pair of kneeling horses at Xiaoling near Nanjing, the 14th century tomb of the Hongwu Emperor.

A CHINESE WHITISH CELADON JADE PARFUMERIE of cylindrical form, the body finely carved and pierced with pavilions amidst rocky outcrops from which sprout pine trees with a circular lid at either end, carved with foliage around the edge, and one with a four-character inscription, the stone of the central section of whitish pale celadon colour and the lids at either end of a slightly stronger pale celadon colour, 14.5cm long x 4cm diam., in a fitted hardwood case with a silk-lined interior and a sliding lid, the underside with an old collectors label.
