Killian O’Flaherty, Contemporary.BIRD BATHHand carved granite, 39” high (99cm), including base. Killian O'Flaherty.is an eight generation stone mason from the granite village of Ballyknockan, Co Wicklow. Ballyknockan granite has been used on many historical building for centuries and right up to the present day. The Four Courts, Dublin Castle and The Dáil are examples. Killian is a master craftsman as his bird bath shows.

Architectural: A rare bronze door knocker in the form of a Cockatrice by Anton Dominik Fernkorn circa 1860 34cm high Anton Dominik Fernkorn (1813-1878) was born in Erfurt near Leipzig and studied sculpture under Johann Baptist Stiglmaier and Ludwig Michael Schwanthaler in Munich, from 1836 to 1840. His first sculptural project, “Saint George and the Dragon” for the courtyard of the Montenuovo palace, attracted attention, and the Austrian government appointed him director of the imperial bronze foundry at Vienna, in 1840, where he was part of the movement against the Neo-Classicism. He rediscovered Baroque sculpture and used it as the basis for his equestrian statue of Archduke Charles (1859), who had defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Aspern in 1809. This unusual bronze door knocker, baroque in style, is virtually identical in modelling to a large scale cockatrice made for the medieval Trsat castle in modern day Croatia. (see picture) This cockatrice, the so-called Dragon of Trsat, was a mythical creature cast in bronze that grew to become one of the best known symbols of the city. There are two, both commissioned by Austrian Field-Marshal and Count Laval Nugent who purchased the castle in the 19th century. A big history buff, Nugent, originally of Irish descent, was particularly keen on the legacy of the Frankopan, one of the leading noble families in Croatia from the 12th to the 17th century. As Trsat Castle used to belong to the Frankopan dynasty, Nugent was happy to acquire the edifice along with another similar estate, the Frankopan castle in Bosiljevo. The cockatrices, by Anton Dominik Fernkorn were installed in front of the central object on the castle grounds, guarding the gate to what is now Nugent’s mausoleum. For the Cathedral of Speyer, in 1858 he completed six of the eight free-stone statues of the German emperors buried there. He also made a statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy, but by unveiling in 1865 he was mentally ill and no longer able to work. He is well remembered for his portraits, and these include a bust of the Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and the funerary bust of Carl Ludwig Freiherr von Bruck in 1862. He was also a noted animalier, producing works such as the Lion of Aspern in Vienna. He died at the age of 65 in the hospital for mental patients in Saint Radengundu near Graz. Garden Statues: A rare Coade stone figure of a seated man stamped Coade, Lambeth 1840 60cm high by 56cm wide Eleanor Coade (d.1821) opened her Lambeth Manufactory for ceramic artificial stone in 1769, and appointed the sculptor John Bacon as its manager two years later. She was employed by all the leading late 18th century architects. From about 1777 she began her engraved designs, which were published in 1784 in a catalogue of over 700 items entitled A Descriptive Catalogue of Coade’s Artificial Stone Manufactory. Then in 1799, the year she entered into partnership with her cousin John Sealy, she issued a handbook of her Pedlar’s Lane exhibition Gallery. The firm became Coade and Sealy from this date and following Sealy’s death in 1813, it reverted to Coade and in 1821 with the death of the younger Eleanor Coade, control of the firm passed to William Croggan, who died in 1835, following bankruptcy. Coade’s manufactures resembling a fine-grained natural stone, have always been famed for their durability. This piece, made in the last years of Coade’s production would have formed part of a larger group, perhaps as an individual commission on a building.

*Val Barry (1937-2018) three stoneware 'sail' vases: each of narrow slab built profile, the largest with off white and grey vertically veined decoration, the smaller with stencilled decoration and grey stone glazes, impressed personal seals, 27, 22 and 21 cm high.*Note - following a trip to China in April 1978 organised by the Craftsman Potters Association and a switch from the wheel to slab building, 'Sail' vases were one of the first new forms Val Barry conceived apparently influenced by the sails of becalmed junks.

MILTON WRIGHT - I BELONG TO YOU 7" PROMO (SATIRON 141). A Northern monster from Milton Wright with I Belong To You c/w Like A Rolling Stone, this the original promo US pressing on Satiron Records (141). The record is in solid VG condition showing some surface and scuff markings that are more notable on the 'Like A Rolling Stone' side. A name written twice on one label and once on the other. The markings are never of a heavier nature with no scratches to mention.

STONE'S MASONRY - HOT ROCK C/W FLAPJACKS 7" (PURDAH RECORDS 45-3504). Another original Purdah release here with this ace double header from Stone's Masonry, who comprised of Martin Stone, Michael and Paul Riley and Pete Solley (connections to The Action, Savoy Brown, Chris Farlowe and Procol Harum amongst others!). The record is in VG+ condition with some light and minor surface markings, none of which are of a heavier nature whatsoever. With nice clean labels, the four prong centre is fully intact.
