PAUL BIRKBECK [1939-2019]. The Sword and the Stone - King Arthur. acrylic and gouache. 26 x 36 cm - overall including frame 40 x 50 cm. Provenance: the artist's family; private collection, UK. See lot 129 for a brief CV. [very good condition - unexamined out of frame]. Buyers premium of 20% + vat is payable.
FRANK AVRAY WILSON [1914-2009]. Free, 1958-9. oil on canvas.signature and date on reverse [photo attached to the reverse of canvas].124 x 62 cm - unframed, but can be hung as is [the current owner preferred it unframed and hung from the wood stretcher]. Provenance: Stone Gallery, Newcastle [early 1960s]; private collection, UK. Exhibited: Redfern Gallery, 1960; Whitford Fine Art, 2018 [asking price £18000+ according to the current owner].A really good example of Avray Wilson's work from his prime period.Avray Wilson is one of the UK's first abstract expressionists [action painters] - he has become quite popular recently, but he is still rather underrated in our opinion.[good condition - the canvas has been re-lined - there was no damage, but after removing the original frame the owner found the canvas was a little loose and the stretcher feeble, so he got it re-stretched and attached to a new more sturdy stretcher and re-lined - a photograph was taken of the original signature and date and attached to the reverse of the canvas]. Buyers premium of 20% + VAT is payable. ARR 4%
Sir JACOB EPSTEIN [1880-1959]. Baby Asleep [Babe's Head], 1907. bronze, edition of 12, on Hoptonwood stone base [cast in 1907]. signed + with Hebrard Foundry stamp. 31 cm high including base [bronze 13.0 cm high 15.0 cm long side view]. Provenance: The artist; Twenty-One Gallery, London, 5 April 1916 - with original 1916 framed invoice - £28; W M Carnegie, London; private collection, UK. Epstein held his first one-man exhibition at the Twenty-One Gallery and they represented him for the first few years before Leicester Galleries took over. This is Epstein's first bronze sculpture - it was originally thought to have been modelled in 1902-4, but as can be seen from Epstein's note on the back of the invoice frame, it was 1907.This is also one of the first 2 or 3 casts of this sculpture, cast in 1907 - the earliest casts were signed and featured the foundry stamp - later casts were unsigned with no foundry stamp. Most casts appearing on the market were cast posthumously in the 1960s by Lady Epstein [all unsigned].Literature: 'The Sculpture of Jacob Epstein', E. Silber, Phaidon, 1986, p. 119, no.3.; 'Jacob Epstein', Dr Justine Hopkins, Styca Press, 2018, plate 1.Sir Jacob Epstein is one of the greatest sculptors of all time and his work sold for enormous prices in the 1950s and 1960s - his market is currently experiencing a bit of a lull, so a good time to buy perhaps? The last very early cast on the market was in the Roy Davids collection and sold at Bonhams 4.3.2015 [lot 297] for £9400 - but our cast has a fully documented provenance with the original 1916 invoice.[very good condition - the stone base has 3 small chips at the bottom corners]. Buyers premium of 20% + VAT is payable. ARR 4%.
§ A HISTORIC DUBLIN SILVER-GILT PRESENTATION TROWEL, Dublin 1792, the blade formed as an armorial with bright cut rim, the centre engraved with a large coat of arms, the reverse engraved with an illustration of Annesley Bridge and inscribed Annesley Bridge Erected by The Right Honble and Honble the Trustees for Improving the Roads leading from Dublin to Malahide, Raheny, Clontarf &c. The first stone was laid by the Honble Richard Annesley on the 25th day of July in the Year of Our Lord MDCCXCII and in the 33d year of the Reign of his Majesty George IIId. Rich Evans Esqr. Engineer., applied with faceted green stained ivory handle. 38cm longProvenance: The Collection of the Late Dr Kurt TicherThe bridge is named after the Hon Richard Annesley, 6th Earl of Anglesey, who was a well-established and important figure in the development of Dublin commercial and civil life during the late 19th and early 20th Century. As well as holding a number of principal positions including Director of the Royal Canal Company, a Commissioner of Irish Excise, Irish Customs, Annesley was also an MP in the Irish House of Commons up until the Act of Union. Although the events at Annesley Bridge during the 1916 Rising do not feature prominently in the history books, ferocious fighting involving the Local members of the Citizen Army and Volunteers took place not only on the bridge but in the surrounding areas. While historians have found it difficult to compile accurate figures indicating the number of those wounded and killed in the battle, there is thought to have been a significant number of casualties, including civilians caught in the crossfire, some in their homes.§ Bidders should be advised that importation regulations of several countries, including the US, prohibits the importation of ivory and that of coral, or any goods containing same. Therefore Adams advises prospective purchasers who intend to ship lots containing either ivory or other specimen that fall under CITES regulation, to another country to familiarize themselves with the relevant importation regulations prior to bidding. Adams will not be responsible for shipping items herein and the onus will be on the buyer to organize shipping at their own behest.Condition Report: Very good overall condition The stained ivory handle with some small nibbles to the tip of and edge, see images The back with some surface scratching commensurate with age and gilding worn especially to rim Hallmarks slightly rubbed Armorial and inscription clear See additional images
